Help preserve and remaster this classic 8-bit video game for today’s and for future generations!
Slightly Magic is a classic 8-bit and 16-bit computer game released in the early 1990s, written and programmed by myself. The game received 89% in Sinclair User Magazine, 94% in Your Sinclair Magazine, and was voted one of the top 100 games of all time by readers of Your Sinclair.
With your help, I aim to bring Slightly back to life, by producing an 8-bit Legacy Edition of Slightly Magic, featuring the original artwork and gameplay, but resolving some of the original platform limitations:
PC/Mac/Linux desktop versions are planned, together with OUYA games console, followed by iOS and Android tablet and phone editions.
The Slightly Trilogy
Slightly Magic was planned as the first in a series of three games. The second, Slightly Spooky, was finished but never released. The UK software industry collapsed, virtually overnight. Work was never even started on the third, which is a great pity. I hope this Kickstarter campaign will be the first step in completing the Slightly Trilogy (see below for more details).
Your Room in the Castle Awaits:
You too can have your own named room in the castle, with a low-res portrait (to match the game style) on the wall. Your room name can be up to 22 characters, including any spaces and punctuation.
I’ll include a limited number of these, which are very close to the game start screen. You’ll be able to enter a code in a special screen, then when you play the game you’ll see your own special screen. The codes will work on all desktop versions of the game, so you’ll be able to give your code to anyone with a copy of the game and they’ll be able to enter your unique room too! Swap codes with friends. (I’ll try to include these unique rooms on tablet and phone versions too, but I may be limited by platform resources).
HAND-DRAWN ARTWORK REWARDS:
Music by Allister Brimble
Allister Brimble, one of the leading Video Games Musicians wrote the original Slightly Magic music score. He’s agreed, if funding is achieved, to rerecord his original music score with his latest instruments and equipment.
Actual Real Magic – OUYA matched funding:
Double Our Fun(ds)! We’re participating in OUYA’s #FreeTheGames Fund, created by OUYA to support developers making new and creative console games. OUYA will match your pledge dollar-for-dollar up to your goal amount (and a max of $250,000), so help us get there and make a great game for everyone! To be eligible for this match, we commit that this game will be an OUYA exclusive* for a period of time. To learn more about OUYA, go to www.OUYA.tv.
*OUYA exclusive: game will be available on OUYA for between 1 and 6 months before iOS and Android versions (1 month per $10,000 fund matching from OUYA, to a maximum of 6 months).
Slightly Spooky – the game that was, the game that wasn’t. The game that is yet to be…
So what are you going to do with the extra money if the OUYA funding is successful?
A fair question, and I’m glad you asked. If I’m successful in obtaining OUYA matched funding and my initial goal is met, I’ll commit to producing the legendary lost Slightly game, Slightly Spooky, and give all backers who are eligible for Slightly Magic a free digital copy.
Slightly Spooky was the follow-up to Slightly Magic. I’d originally planned (still do) a trilogy. As a matter of fact, Slightly Spooky was written and programmed on at least one platform by myself. Unfortunately, due to the collapse of much of the UK games industry, it never saw the light of day.
If I’m successful in obtaining OUYA matched funding, all backers who are eligible for Slightly Magic game will receive Slightly Spooky as a digital download for Mac/PC/Linux and (of course) OUYA. I’ll also let backers know when the iOS and Android versions can be downloaded for free. Now that really would be some kind of magic, wouldn’t it?
Does Slightly Spooky exist in it’s original form, or will it be a totally new version?
Watch the backers updates to see, if it looks like funding is reached.
Estimated Delivery: September 2014
Stretch Goal £12000 – The third Slightly Game
If this stretch goal is reached, regardless of the fate of Slightly Spooky, I’ll commit to producing the third game in the Slightly Trilogy. I’ve had the title ready since I began work on the original Slightly Magic, but I never started work on the game.
That might be a good thing. It means that I could now start the game afresh, using today’s technology and graphics resolutions. And it will really be something special. All backers eligible for Slightly Magic will get a digital copy of the game, should this stretch goal be reached.
What’s the game called? Ah, you’ll have to wait for backers’ updates to find out, if and when the stretch goal is reached. I’ve kept it a secret for 20 years, after all!
Estimated delivery: July 2015.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Working from the original game has a number of advantages. The graphics are almost completely designed (only a few minor tweaks are needed), although some need to be lifted from the original 8bit code. Plus I’ll be working from the original game design and map, meaning that the majority of the work involves programming. Since I programmed the original game on 4 formats it shouldn’t present too many problems, particularly using a modern development system. Developing on a number of platforms is so much easier today.
Having said that, I don’t underestimate the work which lies ahead. The tablet and phone versions hold particular challenges, and while I’ll try to squeeze everything in, I can’t promise all the extras of the desktop versions, although I’m hopeful. They’ll also need an on-screen joystick, which will mean altering the original layout, but nothing major.
I’ve already sourced printing and duplication, and have used both companies before. They’re based in the UK, and the duplicators in particular work at blistering speed. I’ve handled digital distribution over the internet myself before, so hopefully all bases are covered.
I’ve tried to set deadlines realistically, even leaving time for delays. I’ll be keeping myself as healthy as possible, eating good food and taking regular exercise (running). I’m really looking forward to bringing Slightly back into the world, I think we need him back!
