War Child, the charity for children affected by conflict, today announces the launch of GameOn, a brand-new hub which will showcase new and exciting gaming projects. Visit www.warchild.org.uk/GameOn to find out more.
Ten years since the charity announced its first gaming partnership, over £2,000,000 ($2,500,000) has been raised to support its work through innovative collaboration with studios, developers, publishers and gamers.
War Child is encouraging members of the gaming industry to access the GameOn hub and share new ideas, put on events, or create gaming packages. Funds raised by new projects will help to change the lives of thousands of the world’s most disadvantaged children.
Some of the biggest names in the business have already leant their support to GameOn, including Rhianna Pratchett – award-winning scriptwriter and story designer and Randy Pitchford – co-founder of Gearbox Software. Both have provided a selection of video messages alongside a host of others, which are available to view via the new hub.
For gamers wanting to get involved, fundraising packs detailing how to get started are also available to download from the GameOn page and all the latest GameOn news will be shared on twitter @WarChild_Gaming.
Long-time supporter of War Child Miles Jacobson, Studio Director at Sports Interactive, developers behind the Football Manager series says;
“War Child does incredible and vital work in rebuilding lives across Afghanistan, Iraq, Jordan, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic and Yemen. I remember being blown away by the charity’s drive and enthusiasm when I first got involved more than 20 years ago when I worked in the music business; and it’s great to see that same focus now directed on games through the GameOn initiative. I would urge other studios and developers to explore War Child’s work and join the campaign to help make a much-needed difference to the lives of children affected by conflict.”
Wayne Emanuel, Gaming Development Manager at War Child says;
“What we have achieved to date with the help of the gaming industry is incredible and GameOn is an exciting next step for War Child. Our journey so far has seen collaborations with major players in the industry and with the new gaming hub we hope to encourage more developers, studios, publisher and gamers to join us on our mission striving for a world where no child’s life is torn apart by war.”
War Child’s move into gaming has been strengthened by projects such as Armistice which saw the creation of exclusive downloadable content encouraging peaceful gameplay, and Help: The Game where 11 participating studios and teams of developers created an original games bundle.
Continued support from the gaming industry will help War Child’s crucial work delivering high-impact programmes rebuilding lives across Afghanistan, Iraq, Jordan, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, and Yemen.
War Child understands children’s needs, respects their rights, and puts them at the centre of the solution – from supporting Syrian children to access education, to reintegrating child soldiers in the Central African Republic and working in juvenile justice in Afghanistan.
