RUNESCAPE EXPANSIONS UNVEILED AS THE GATES TO MENAPHOS: THE GOLDEN CITY OPEN THIS SUMMER
The biggest-ever shake up of Jagex’s evolving MMORPG takes place on 5th June as the gates to an entire city that’s been locked away in plain sight for more than a decade are opened.
With an emphasis on discovery and exploration, Menaphos is a city of legend that has been hiding in plain sight within the game for more than 12 years. Until now, players have never seen beyond the city gates – but that’s all about to change. When the gates to Menaphos open, players will discover a vast sandbox of a city with hanging gardens, streams, buildings trimmed with gold, and a huge pyramid – a mastaba – that looms over the city.
Menaphos is full of untold riches and stories waiting to be unearthed by the game’s millions of players. However, players will arrive in the city as unknown outsiders and must build their reputation within the city to become both exalted and legendary among the inhabitants. As they explore the city, it won’t be long until they discover the dark secret of corruption spreading through the metropolis. In addition, there will be new quests, a constantly shifting network of tombs that can be raided for their ancient riches and a new Slayer Dungeon, which will see the Slayer Skill level cap raised from 99 to 120 for the very first time.
“RuneScape has always been underpinned with the telling of great stories and quests, and launching RuneScape Expansions – beginning with Menaphos: The Golden City – allows us to do that in an entirely new way,” said David Osborne, Lead Designer, RuneScape. “We’re working hard to ensure this gleaming metropolis eclipses the Menaphos that’s been in the imagination of our many millions of players for more than a decade, and we can’t wait to share more details over the coming weeks before the gates open.”
The launch of RuneScape Expansions continues the long-running vein of Jagex working alongside its player base and letting them help decide the way its games evolve. A player survey conducted in 2016 revealed a desire for larger, more significant updates that would make massive additions to the game. The result? A total overhaul of the traditional weekly release schedule and the introduction of RuneScape Expansions.
