Star Wars Celebration, London, 16th July, 2016 – HTC, a pioneer in innovative, smart technologies, in partnership with Valve® and Lucasfilm, today unveiled the virtual reality experience Trials on Tatooine will be available to Vive owners for free from Monday 18th July. Now anyone with a Vive can pick up a lightsaber and help defend a galaxy far, far away.
Developed under the guidance of Rob Bredow, Lucasfilm’s chief technology officer, and co-written by Bredow and Star Wars canon-keeper Pablo Hidalgo, Trials on Tatooine allows you to truly step into the Star Wars universe for the first time.
Strap on your Vive headset, take a remote in hand and let space and stars surround you. The opening crawl begins — the familiar Star Wars main theme triumphantly blaring — but this is no normal Star Wars prologue. It’s three-dimensional, you’re right on top of it. You learn that Luke Skywalker, having defeated Darth Vader and the Emperor, is looking to rebuild the Jedi Order. One hopeful Padawan is heading to Tatooine. That Padawan is you.
The prologue fades, the camera pans, and you soon find yourself on the desert homeworld of your master. Literally, on Tatooine. Turn 360 degrees, look up, look down. You’re not anywhere else.
During the experience, you will encounter the Millennium Falcon, and even get a special gift from Artoo — a lightsaber, which you’ll soon get to use.
If you can’t wait, the Star Wars Celebration event in London will showcase demos of Trials on Tatooine today and Sunday 17th July as well as events, workshops and exhibits focused around Star Wars.
