Ghostly sightings. Tragic stories. Weird characters. Paranormal activities. Ghost hunts. Within the throbbing den of activity that happens inside mega-casinos and resorts, there lurks a darker underbelly. There have been reports of haunted casinos all over the world, and we are now making a detour from the normal partying and gambling to see some of the allegedly haunted casinos in the world. Who haunts modern-day players? Let’s see some spine-chilling cases.
There are people who simply can’t help but stick around their favourite venues. Even after they are dead. We know it sounds incredible, but many well-documented reports of ghostly sightings occuring in casinos all over the world have made us look into this topic. One of the most iconic places on Earth is Las Vegas, where everything from the macabre to the cute can be sold somehow. In addition to haunted spots like parks, hotels, and wedding chapels, there are spooky casinos as well. Four of them, actually. In the world’s most prominent gambling location.
Flamingo Casino – Las Vegas
A Sin City icon, deeply associated with famous mobster Bugsy Siegel, who played a central role in making the sleepy Las Vegas to the status of the world’s entertainment capital. He was shot in 1947 and many people believe he seems to have chosen Flamingo Casino (which he developed) as a place to spend he’s afterlife.
There are many reports in which employees and guests have talked about Bugsy Siegel’s ghost lurking around the Presidential Suite or lounging by the pool late at night. There is also the case of a cleaning lady who promptly quit her job after allegedly seeing the mobster during a night shift.
Bally’s Casino & Resort
In 1980, when the location was still known as MGM Grand Hotel and Casino, a fire started because a faulty wiring in a casino restaurant at 7:00 AM and quickly spread through the hotel and casino. The building was packed with more than 5,000 people at the time and 87 died. Around 700 were injured during the blaze. MGM was rebuilt within 9 months and sold to the Bally Entertainment Corporation in 1985. Shadowy apparitions and shapes have been spotted in the stairwells, which is actually very creepy, given the fact that most people died there while trying to escape.
There are a bunch of people claiming that the restrooms are also haunted, with lights switching off and on, toilets flushing by themselves. A 21 dealer even reported that he saw a bunch of players at a table staring strangely his way on a very crowded night. The moment he looked down and up again, that group had vanished into thin air.
The Luxor – Las Vegas
Las Vegas’ iconic and unmistakeable Luxor casino is deeply steeped in ancient symbolism and hence carries plenty of mystical meanings. Turns out there have been reports of unexplained and unusual incidents at the Luxor, and this prompted people to start wondering if supernatural forces are involved.
In 1993, during construction work, some workers went through freak accidents. To be more specific, one worker killed another. Later, Luxor saw a few guests commiting suicide by jumping off the balconies. In 2006, a car bomb exploded and killed a man in the parking garage.
An active ghost is of a woman who is said to walk on the halls of the 12th to 14th floors, allegedly pushing guests or breathing down their necks.
Circus-Circus – Las Vegas
Another iconic Las Vegas casino that has a very shady history of mob and crime-related activities. In addition to this, it exudes an eerie aura because of the creepy circus theme and because of Jay Sarno, the man who built it.
Not long after the construction ended, the casino was not so profitable as there was no hotel nearby and high rollers did not come. He turned to the mafia for that massive help – $23 million. Things didn’t go well and he was charged for tax fraud and mafia connection, so Sarno sold the place. During the years, the casino got through renovations and became what is it today. There have been reports of ghostly activity in rooms 203, 123, 230 over the years. Screams, whispers begging for help and even the words ”HELP ME” have appeared on numerous bathroom mirrors.
Reading about all these staggering cases makes it almost impossible not to wonder whether the ghosts of dead gamblers really haunt their favourite casinos.
