A sudden bereavement throws Luke, a fiercely independent young man with Down syndrome, into a daunting new environment where he finds unexpected support from his feisty, streetwise carer and a local heir dealing with his own demons. As friendships bloom and long-buried secrets are revealed, Luke verges dangerously close to disaster. My Feral Heart is a beautifully realised, understated character study bolstered by strong performances, distinctive cinematography and a deeply evocative score.
My Feral Heart is the multi-award winning, BIFA nominated, NFA and IARA winning debut from Jane Gull and produced by Rum Jam Films. It’s been dubbed ‘the small British indie with a mighty heart that everyone is talking about’ after it garnered terrific critical notices and became a cinema-on-demand sensation.
It stars Steven Brandon, an actor with Down syndrome, and is one of only a few films to cast an actor with a disability in a lead role. Steven’s impressive debut as Luke has already won him 3 Best Actor awards including at the National Film Awards UK 2017, 2 BIFA nominations, and universal praise from film critics.
Writer Duncan Paveling says: ‘My inspiration came from the similarities and experiences that we all share, regardless of needs. This story is about ‘ability’, not ‘disability.”
“The script’s originality and characters inspired me to choose this film as my debut feature”, explains Director Jane Gull. “I am attracted to stories that explore the human condition, and while this is a film about loss I could see that the main character and the story itself could be treated with humour and a sense of hope”.
The film will be released digitally on 13th November and is available on DVD in the UK 27th November as well as on Sky Store ahead of its UK broadcast premiere on Sky Cinema on March 21, 2018 (World Down Syndrome Day).
