The Nintendo 3DS has been out for just over two years and we have seen a vast improvement on its game library. Let’s be honest as the 3DS first came about the library was pretty limited and upon that the 3D feature seemed to be more of a gimmick than anything, though looking at 3D games today I can safely say that even if they are still there just to make the game look pretty… game companies have finally found a nice effective way of having 3D in their games. Alien Chaos 3D is a great E-Store game which can be played in short bursts or for lengthy periods of time. This indie game was a nice little one to review which shows that the Nintendo 3DS truly has a great range of games available.
Story
The game has a very minimal story to it being based at ‘Mama and Son’s Cleaning and Demolition Services’ where an alien invasion has taken place and Mum has been kidnapped. Over the several levels you will have to fight various robot alien animal creatures… in order to save Mum and save the day. The game is split into several episodes which have five levels inside and each one has a boss fight at the end, which I can safely say involve you to think outside the box and are a bit of a challenge.
Visuals
Alien Chaos 3D is a beautiful little game with spectacular use of the 3D feature. The levels look as if they have a fair bit of depth within them, even though they are 2D side scroller-esque levels, making the game look visually appealing. The 3D doesn’t really add any more than a nice visual effect to the game and doesn’t help gameplay in anyway, but in all honestly I cannot say this is a bad thing whatsoever. I don’t generally talk about graphics but I feel like it would be good to mention it in this section. Graphically the game has a nice style to it which gives it an arcade game kind of feel. Similarly the game is visually appealing for a younger audience with bright colours and nice cartoony visuals which add to a very gorgeous looking style even if it doesn’t look as high quality as the big gun games like The Legend of Zelda.
Gameplay
Gameplay is an important factor for every game and Alien Chaos 3D’s gameplay is surprisingly fun. The levels seem to be very similar at the beginning; all being relatively easy and not causing much of a challenge for the user. As the game progresses though the difficulty increases and introduces a fair challenge to the player making you want to come back for more. Gameplay focuses on shooting enemies within a small area until they are all cleared. The controls are very easy to learn meaning you will be used to the controls within the first two levels of the game and feel confident whilst playing it. The beauty of this indie game is that it is extremely repetitive. Firstly you can play the story mode as many times as you want to increase your high score and try to get as high as you possibly can, though secondly there is a challenge mode feature which is where players will come time and time again. The main problem which does come across with the challenge mode is that once you know the levels you can get a high score pretty easily – whilst that happens with most challenge games it can make it loose its appeal slightly.
Music
The soundtrack for the game matches the arcade like style of the game. Whilst getting slightly repetitive and being turned off most of the time (due to me playing the game on public transports while testing it) the soundtrack is very nice to listen to when you do have the volume on.
Alien Chaos 3D is a great little game and was highly enjoyable to play. Whilst the game is fun and repetitive you will find yourself going back to your other games after a while… but for a few weeks after purchasing Alien Chaos 3D you will be hooked and have a ton of fun. The game could have a few more missions to keep the game going for a little longer but to be honest the game has hours of fun packed in either way.
The Good and the Bad
Positives:
- + Great difficulty level
- + Nice idea with a great visual style
- + 3D looks gorgeous but 2D is also similarly appealing
Cons:
- – 3D Feature really depends on if you are comfortable with the 3D effect
- – Limited number of story levels, which can be completed fairly quickly
I had hours of fun playing Alien Chaos 3D and I can see me having several more hours of fun with it. If you are looking for a nice little 3DS game which you can download via the store make sure to give Alien Chaos 3D a shot because it is truly fun and will keep you hooked for several hours.
