Marvelous Europe highlights the hidden depth behind the retro-styled JRPG on Steam
Alphadia Genesis, currently available on Steam for $14.99 is a turn-based JRPG with far more depth than first meets the eye. Don’t be fooled by the retro-styled graphics, the KEMCO developed game features a deep combat system and an alternative robust end-game scenario, giving players a whole host of extra content once they have finished the initial story.
The combat of Alphadia Genesis involves many systems that intertwine to create a cohesive and deep battle experience that continues to grow the more time players put into playing. At a most basic level, ‘Energi’ is a system comprising of magic, elements and spells – each character has a natural affinity with a single form of Energi, but can also attune, control and wield other elements with the expansion and use of another system; Rings. Coming into play right at the beginning of the game, the Ring system allows players to advance an extra element at any time simply by equipping a Ring of another type, these Rings double a characters effectiveness, and provide unbelievable flexibility at later levels.
Break Skills, another layer of the battle system, are special skills performed by each character with their chosen weapon – each varying in style, ability, and effectiveness. Aurra, Fray’s sister, uses a Firearm that allows her break skill to target enemy limbs, disabling and weakening an enemy’s performance in battle. Whereas Enah, a type 2000 clone, uses her Chakram skills to inflict Confusion, Rage and more, turning the battle on its head completely. Together with the Energi and Ring systems, these work together to help define each characters role in combat while still allowing the player room to customize their progression throughout the game.
The maximum party size in Alphadia Genesis is 6; four active members on the front-line for direct combat and two at the back-line. When placing characters on the back line, each different pairing of characters will exhibit a passive bonus upon the party via the ‘Yell System’. These passive bonuses provide your front-line characters with a variety of potential buffs that will assist in all manner of fights, be it a higher yield on thievery, or a boost to your raw Strength.
Not only will back-line characters provide passive bonuses, but they also provide a brand new attack system to be used by any character. An on-screen meter will build as the battle progresses and, once full, the player can utilize a “Sub-Member Assist”. This powerful attack unleashes a flurry of Energi and Break Skills on an opponent, dealing massive damage and inflicting devastating status effects.
In addition to the surprisingly deep combat system is the huge array of end-game content. Once a player has completed the ‘main’ storyline, they are encouraged to discover the ‘true ending’. To do so they must return to the final fight once again and choose a newly added scenario option to change the course of the story.
In doing so, the player will gain access to additional content from Legendary Weapons and Armour quests to Optional Bosses and an extended Battle-Arena.
