Assassin’s Creed Odyssey finishes up its first load of DLC with the final episode to Legacy of the First Blade, with the 3rd episode coming out 2 months after the 2nd. Following on from the previous episodes, we will see how our lives have changed after giving birth and living with Natakas and Darius. Though with the watchful eye of the Order of the Ancients we cannot ever be safe.
Seemingly starting a few days after episode 2, though it is hard to tell as the baby doesn’t seem to age at all, we will begin this episode by hunting some boars. Sadly I was interrupted by some Athenian soldiers, but they died all the same as the boars as collateral from my arrows. A hop-skip-jump later and we’re eating both boar and shellfish at a family feast. All is well until the fire bearing order members attacked.
Turmoil, death and a kidnapped child later we find ourselves once again helping Darius take down the order. Moving to Messenia, not exactly a new area but one with little within it previously, we are tasked with taking down 6 new members of the Cult of Kosmos, alongside their final leader. Your wet blanket lover also has no real development, merely being the opposite gender to allow for a child for the DLC to center itself around.
Episode 3 will last you around 2-3 hours just like the previous ones, but with more members to assassinate, side-missions and a final mission to rebuild a lost blade you could rack up a few extra hours to that final playtime.
Disappointingly, episode 3 fails to add anything new in the way of mechanics, aside from some new armour, the final sword and a new skill. The 6 members is a higher number, as we are only given 1 as a freebie this time around and the leader being a boss with over the top health and easy to anticipate moves.
Aside from the cult members, we have some forced open combat, a stealth mission and a couple of missions that allow either stealth or open combat. There is a sea-battle segment but they are easily taken care of with a single ram as well as 2 volleys of arrows. The “variety” found within this DLC is shockingly poor, especially when put against the previous episodes or even the base game itself.
Episode 3 is still surprisingly easy, even more so with all the new abilities granted to us alongside new pieces of equipment. The only real difficulty I faced within the episode is where you have to save a civilian about to be executed and I was ambushed by 3 bounty hunters at once, which isn’t really anything to do with the DLC and is just a base mechanic.
After a rather forced relationship and childbearing, the DLC’s story leaves too much to be desired. It is cliché, enemies forgive one another and the cult thinks far too highly of themselves. Popular phrases of the series are thrown around without much weight, lessening their impact to the player when they eventually hear those old words. Plenty of moments are dedicated to chests, items or skills that end up being lacklustre, combined with the previous experiences.
Overall, Episode 3 gets a 5/10, it shows the horribly stale formulae of the base game and that of the DLC as a whole. You’re moving around a previous area with uninspired missions of either killing a group of targets or freeing prisoners. It adds nothing exciting like a new ship weapon, nor even the assassin’s wrist blade. All this build up is just dropped at the end with no real reward, aside from the broken blade to which you can repair with an extra 5 hours. There are only 2 cutscenes, no real graphically impressive ones to be seen and your decisions seem pointless in the missions that are given to you. The Legacy will sadly be forgotten in my eyes, as it was not memorable and just gave me chores to do.
