Camera Obscura is an innovative puzzle-platformer illustrated with carefully crafted pixel graphics and set to a beautiful custom soundtrack. The innovative “afterimage” mechanic allows players to temporarily clone the Tower’s architecture – spanning gaps, creating staircases, and freezing platforms in place.
- Innovative “afterimage” mechanic. The player can “flash” the screen to create a ghostly double of their surroundings. This afterimage can be manipulated to turn walls into stairs, platforms into cages, and even defend oneself against the creatures in the tower.
- Custom level editor. With no programming or scripting required, users can create their own fully-featured custom levels. Level packs can be shared via the Steam Workshop.
- Original soundtrack Eleven beautifully-composed tracks set the tone through the Tower’s eight zones.
Camera Obscura was born in April 2011, when the developers participated in a week-long game jam at the University of California, Irvine, hosted by the Video Game Development Club (VGDC). The theme for the game jam was ‘shadows’. Camera Obscura was extremely well-received by the jam participants for its innovative afterimage mechanic and pixel graphics. After the jam, several members of the team continued working on the game around their jobs and class schedules, adding visual polish and creating dozens of level concepts to explore the possibilities of the afterimage mechanic. In December 2013, Camera Obscura launched on Steam Greenlight. After a long wait, the game was Greenlit by fans on December 29th, 2014. Camera Obscura will be the first game published to Steam by members of the UCI VGDC.
The game has been garnering attention throughout the Orange County game development community. Its first trailer has been featured on GameSpot, AOL Games and Daily Motion.
