I have been looking for a camera (Action Camera) ever since I started seeing many Cyclists having them on their bikes or helmets and when I was offered the chance to review the DBPower SJ400 1080P Action Camera, and get to keep it, I jumped at the chance.
GoPro seems to be the choice a lot of cyclists recommend these days, but the price has always been an issue for me and possibly many others, this camera though rolls in at £45.99* (29.05.2015 Amazon), way below the price of any good quality GoPro Action Camera, but can it perform?
Before we look at the performance and why I really wanted one, let’s look at what you get for your hard earned cash.
Well, in the box you get the following items, and there is a lot.
1 X DBPOWER Action Camera
1 X Waterproof Case
1 X Case bracket
1 X Case clip
1 X Bike bracket
1 X Multifunctional clip
1 X Camera clip
1 X Suction Cup Mount
3 X Straps
2 X 3M sticks
1 X USB cable
1 X Manual
If you were to purchase the more expensive camera, GoPro again, you would need to purchase, many of the additions separately, another plus for the BPower Action Camera.
Now we move on to why I really wanted one, to record all you ignorant, can’t drive, break the law stupid drivers, that think the road is all theirs and no one else. The drivers that kiss the curb, but instead kiss the cyclists, speed, open doors without looking, don’t indicate on roundabouts and turning and still use their mobile phones. I have already caught many drivers being dumb, ignorant and given my local police station the footage, this is the best thing I have got, and I hope it makes drivers use more common sense.
Not only that, it’s always the cyclist, who is at fault, and it’s us who takes the abuse from drivers, having the camera will record everything and make it a cut and dry case if it was to go to court, so drivers be warned, you are being filmed.
Moving passed the safety reasons for the Camera, I have also thought it would be nice to record my rides in the valleys of wales. There are plenty of cycle routes and the main one around here would be route 8 which is the Taff Trail, which goes from the Brecon Beacons all the way down to Cardiff.
My route 8 started at Mountain Ash and I like to cycle to my local town of Pontypridd, it takes around 45mins depending on how busy the route is with walkers and other cyclists. It’s a beautiful ride through winding paths, great wildlife and our wonderful water contamination facility, which stinks. You get to see plenty of country creatures from sheep to cows, birds of prey, rabbits, snakes and much more on your travel, it’s just a marvel to be seen.
Setting up the camera is super easy, all you need to do is turn it on, press the mode key a few times till you see the menu on the small display screen on the back, change the date, set the resolution you wish to record with, turn on, turn on motion detection if you wish to, and of course make sure you turn on anti shacking. The main thing you will need is a Micro SD Card 32GB, have a look around and you can find them for under £5.00, this is an idea of my own for BPower to stand out a little more, put the card with the camera as well.
Use one of the many accessories that come with it, for me it was either the helmet attachment or the bike bracket, I chose to use the bike bracket, as I intend on purchasing a new helmet soon, so did not wish to waste the 3M sticky attachment on my old helmet. The set up was easy, as everything attached and tightens using hand tightening screens, no need for a screw driver, however I would recommend using a screwdriver on the screw, just to get that extra grip and security.
Now I started to record as I got to the main route and I have also uploaded the footage to YouTube, I have to say through the conversion is not great and does not represent the quality of the raw footage, which is a lot better. I recorded and 1080P @30FPS and I did not stop until I got to Pontypridd Park, which by then the battery on the camera was dead, which I then wondered, when did it die. Taking it back home, I found the camera died just after leaving Route 8, country pass section, which is approx 5mins away from the park, so the battery only lasted around 40mins, fully charged.
I was well happy as the Camera, it recorded just under 70mins of footage, this is exactly what DBPower stat on the sales sheet, ‘Recording Time: 1080P/ About 70 minutes’, I admit now I did not set the time or date on the camera before I set it up, so please make sure you double check that, it’s easy to miss or forget.
After editing the video I was left with approx. 35mins of footage, which I also speeded for viewing purposes. Now the raw picture quality is great, everything was in High Definition, crystal clear and little to no shake was visible in the recording. I was speaking through the whole ride, and the camera was unable to pick that up through the waterproof case I was using, the only thing which was audible, was the tire treads gripping the path.
The 12MP Camera is good to use as well, but not so good when you zoom in, everything becomes a little bit blurry, as I am no Camera pro here, I can not comment why this happens. The wide lens captures everything in viewing site, kind of like widescreen, which is fantastic for recording my trips.
I will need to work on the conversation to YouTube, so you can see the true quality, however, due to the speed of my internet connection, you might have to wait a little longer. Overall the Action Camera comes with many accessories, saving you plenty of money, great quality raw footage, I do not know why mine only recorded 35mins in total before dying out.
For the price you are paying £45.99 with everything in one package, I cannot really complain, yes, the Camera does record up to 70mins of 1080p footage, which brings it up to the same standard as the GoPro brand. I would like the company to put an SD Card (32GB is less that £5) with the purchase, so you can use the camera straight away, no waiting around the SD Card to arrive.
I am going to give this a 5/5, the Camera creates great raw footage, a bargain price, comes with all the accessories you would need, if you are in need of a camera for security reason or just filming fun, on a budget, then go for this one. There is just one issue that I feel needs to be looked at, the quality of the accessories, they just feel a little cheap, maybe add to the overall package an SD Card 32GB, just gives you that extra over your competitors.
