Dungeons is a strategy RPG developed by Realmforge Studios and published by Kalypso Media Digital. The game revolves around the building of your dungeon to meet the satisfying needs of the heroes that wonder into it. At the beginning of the game you are the prince of the underworld Deimos quietly sitting on your throne in the large catacombs your dungeon has. Until that is your girlfriend now ex decides she wants to overthrow you and opens every door to the surface allowing heroes to pile into your dungeon. Resulting in you having to escape your own dungeon to survive another day, why this is, is unknown as the enemies can be one hit as you walk on by towards the destination. This results in you becoming an average dungeon lord.
During the course of the game you play as the dungeon overlord to create and rebuild your own diabolical demesnes underground. Using the dim-witted goblin workers to dig rooms and corridors and build the rooms and “gimmicks” to satisfy your heroes. Gimmicks are objects that you place around your dungeon to scare and creep the heroes out and satisfy their masochist needs. Gimmicks also increase the powers of your dungeon lord. The Heroes have four types of needs you need to fill, these are; masochist, gold, knowledge and equipment. Their masochist needs are fulfilled from gimmicks and fights with your dungeons creatures, as your wise sidekick… Mr.Sidekick says send in just enough creatures to give the heroes a hard time but a survivable one. Their need for greed is full filled by the piles of treasures you leave around your dungeon, usually kept far away from the exits as once they have filled their needs the heroes will wonder away with your stuff! Their knowledge is governed by the libraries filled with books and secrets quickly fill this area. Lastly the heroes need for equipment is found in the armouries you build around the dungeon, I guess you fill them with previous equipment found on heroes. As these heroes obtain these needs there soul power increases. It is your job as the dungeon lord to K.O these heroes and then torture them to retrieve the soul power they have built up. Advice from Mr.Sidekick, heroes are like pigs you need to feed them and fatten them up before you can squeeze the good parts from them.
Upon knocking the heroes out everything they have taken is replaced just in time for the next hero to fill his greedy needs. The soul power you acquire is used to upgrade creatures, build more gimmicks and complete tasks for your bosses.Creatures are not there to kill the heroes, as Mr.Sidekick says at the beginning they are there to keep you heroes happy and build on soul power. Bosses give you tasks to complete while you are currently doing a mission. These tasks are usually there to inconvenience you by taking gold and soul power.
The graphics of the game are cartoony and to a relatively high standard, details on rocks and walls. Blood fills the torture baths and stain the tables. the character faces might not be all that, but they are not of poor quality either. The items you can place in the dungeon are not scarce and are fitting; skulls, chains, blood, creepy coffins and much more.
The sounds in the game are great; voice acting is the best part of it. The voices and dialogue are just that you would expect from a cartoon dungeon themed TV show. Mr.Sidekick is the epitome of this and really brings the feel of a loyal companion across in his dialogue.
Overall the game is a great pick-up, as long as you don’t relate it to the earlier games of Dungeon Keeper and recommended to any strategy fan.
