The world has been set in a modern-day earth, with several locations being based on locations of earth, E.G Tokyo and Venice. From the design talks we have also seen a lot about the locations spoken of, from the main characters home kingdom of Lucis which is a flourishing city due to its possession of the world’s last remaining crystal.
The game starts off with the kingdom of Lucis under attack from the opposed nation of Niflheim; where the Prince of Lucis, Noctis, escapes with his friends to the countryside. From there on out the party will travel across the world, battling Niflheim’s forces who are an ever present danger to the party. The main objective of their travels is to recover the stolen crystal and return it to their country, which was stolen by Niflheim which continues to attack the other nations.
There has also been interviews with the developers over the story and they have talked about Noctis holding the ability to see a light before someone dies which was given to him by the Goddess of Death. An ability which he shares with another objective of the story, a woman by the name of Stella which the party would more than likely be forced to fight along the road.
Moving on from the cinematic and “flowing”combat of FF13, FF15 uses and enhanced version of the combat found in Kingdom Hearts, named the Active Cross Battle system. Heading in a more realistic and seamless combat system you can rapidly press the attack option for quick attacks, slower for more precise hits or hold it down for Auto-Battle style attacks, with every option changing depending on the circumstance. Magic makes a return in a bigger sense, with magic being affected by the enemies resistances as well as the weather and environment, rainy days putting out fire based spells and dry grassy zones allowing fire to spread. Technique is something new added into the series, at least in this form, as it depicts situational and targeted attacks and abilities, from attacking with teammates to using a special attack against a specified enemy.
Jumping is in place in this release and allows for slight parkour, coupled with warping you will have amazing maneuverability both in and out of battle. Items make a return though not much has been said on those but there has been some talk about the summoning system, where you summon Eidolons to your vicinity to help you in combat. To acquire a Eidolon you must fight and defeat them, or through some story means that haven’t been talked about just yet.
Movement takes on a slight Mirrors Edge feel, as the party will automatically parkour/free-run over and around objects to keep up the pace, combined with Warping you can really explore the space. FF15 also brings back cars to the serie in the form of the groups main transport, either chauffeured by your advisor or driven by you, or if you’re a fan of the series Chocobos make a return as a rentable means of transport. The final mode of transport will be an Airship, a staple of the series.
Aside from abilities and combat there have been a few details released over the menu and items, for instance what weapons the Main Protagonist Noctis can use. Before battle you have a “deck” where you equip a selection of weapons currently including; swords, axes, lances and guns, all of varying sizes and styles. During battle these will automatically switch between depending on the circumstance, as well as you changing them yourself. One of the weapons can be set as the default and will gain slight bonuses like special techniques and activations.
One new addition to the series, if you don’t count scripted sequences in FF6, you can control vehicles and mechs to use against your enemies. Some of the designs look very reminiscent of FF6 with Mech Walkers and tanks.
Party members can have AI set to them, similar to the Gambit System in FF12, where is a certain variable happens then the character will react, E.G health <40 use potion. Not much has been said about this or even been shown in depth but we have been told it is something that is being expanded.
Talking about party members, you can make camp or rent a room to rest up after a long day’s travels, at this time you will be able to converse with the party, consolidate information and eat food prepared for you that will garner buffs for a limited time. Resting is also the only way to level up your character, where it changes the XP gained in the day into levels for your characters. In one interview it was stated that a Level 1 run could be done if you never slept, so Challenge lovers have something to look forward too, especially people who did Level 1 Proud mode on Kingdom Hearts.
FF15 was announced the same year that FF12 was released to english speakers, almost 9 years has passed since then and some people are worried if FF15 will suffer the Duke Nukem syndrome of hype = failure. Seeing the graphics year and year again we can say it will definitely look stunning and it follows along with how Square like to design their games however after the trilogy of FF13 there have been worries that the gameplay won’t be up to snuff.
One of the reasons why the game has taken so long to get even a Demo out was the testing of their new Engine Luminous, as the KH team had to stop using it and swap to UE4. Staff changes also affected the speed at which the game was developed, with the producer, director and artists being added to the team.
FF15 is currently being developed by Square Enix’s 1st Production Department and the Kingdom Hearts team, with the KH team designs the in-game action like combat and movement. The people who worked on Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children are also handling the pre-rendered movies which can be seen in some of the cutscenes released so far.
Overall Thoughts and Feelings
We haven’t heard much, or seen much from this game, but hopefully from the Demo we can finally experience this game firsthand. The music and story are being released here and there with the trailers and interviews but to truly listen to them we need to be able to run around the fields and plains and talk to the people who inhabit the world.
The Demo is on it’s way however, and from an article from eurogamer we have been told it will be included with the Day One boxes of Final Fantasy Type-0. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2015-02-16-final-fantasy-15-episode-duscae-demo-detailed
