Jagex Games Studio has proudly announced that its 24-hour live-streamed gaming and entertainment marathon, held from 12 noon on Friday 26th February as part of SpecialEffect’s GameBlast16 fundraising weekend, raised more than £100,000 for the charity. The figure, generated by the RuneScape community through real-world donations and contributions of in-game wealth via the franchise’s Well of Goodwill mechanic, smashed the total raised in 2015.
A mix of insane gaming and real-life challenges were live-streamed, in partnership with Twitch at http://www.twitch.tv/runescape, throughout the event. These included drinking vile smoothies and eating super-hot chillis; in-game bot busting in RuneScape; sumo wrestling; demonstrating the upcoming online strategy card game, Chronicle: RuneScape Legends; and of course, getting gunged in bright pink gloop.
The GameBlast16 24-hour live-stream saw:
- 400,000 stream video plays on Twitch over the 24 hours.
- Over 9,000,000 minutes watched
- 19,000 concurrent viewersat peak
Hosted by the JMods, Jagex’s crew of community moderators and developers from RuneScape, Old School RuneScape, and Chronicle: RuneScape Legends, the stream also featured big-name streamers, including B0aty, Skillspecs, Dardan, and Justice, alongside star community players to spread awareness and support for SpecialEffect’s work.
Said Neil McClarty, commercial director, RuneScape –
“What an achievement! Our fantastic community continued to donate to the Well of Goodwill all weekend, which has topped up our total to over an incredible £100,000 for SpecialEffect. This is our most successful 24-hour live-stream for a GameBlast fundraiser, with more than three times the amount raised than last year. It is testament to both the RuneScape development teams, our community and their collective desire to support a wonderful charity.”
The team also host a charity auction for exclusive collectables and tech items, which contributed to the total.
Said Mick Donegan, founder and director of SpecialEffect:
“WOW! What an incredible total – this has smashed Jagex’s previous GameBlast 24-hour stream totals and is something of a shock. A massive thank you to the truly remarkable team who managed the marathon and the amazingly generous RuneScape community. Amazing!”
Jagex’s marathon was supported by a collective of incredible sponsors that provided invaluable help to support the event and SpecialEffect, including Twitch, Coolermaster, Overclockers UK, Nvidia and Fragers. Jagex also extends its thanks to Premier OMG Cars, Dominos, Subway Cambridge, Hyper X, GinxTV, Poporopo, and UrPromotions for their much appreciated support and services.
