It has been a long time since I checked out a controller from MegaModz, somewhere around November 2019, I got a custom controller for my Nintendo Switch., you can read the review here. Before that time I reviewed custom controllers for the PS4 and Xbox One which you can read here if interested. As I have used this company twice now and their controllers have been amazing, and I am still using them today I thought why not use them again, and order myself a custom controller for the Xbox Series X.
As I said in my original look at the company they are an American based company so any UK gamers that love these controllers, be aware that the HMRC will be taking their fair share through Duties and Taxes.
As before the controllers are easy to create, just head to this page, if not interested in creating your own there are some custom created ones here. I did see the design I wanted within the pre-designed ones, but I wanted Blue L & R Bumper and ZL & ZR Trigger, a Blue D-Pad and Aquamarine and Grey thumbsticks, so I had to spend a little more. It is worth it, as the final design is sweet.
Creating your custom controller is simple, choose Body Design, Back, Bumper, Triggers, D-Pad, ABXY Buttons, View, Menu and Share, Thumb Sticks, Grip Panels, Accessories and Services.
Services is the build time and warranty plan you wish to use, with the lowest one being $14,99.
As with other controllers in the past, I wish there was more choice, maybe even a way to upload a personal design and use that on a controller, this is a shame as more choice would be amazing. Now I understand the legality of allowing users to upload there own images, however, many sites allow this while making sure the uploader takes full responsibility for copyright infringement and IP Laws.
After designing, the total cost for the finished controller was $115.94 which is £84.79, with a standard official Xbox Series X Controller costing around £54.99. You are only paying £29.80 extra to have a uniquely designed controller just for you, plus delivery costs and stupid Duties and Taxes.
As with every controller I have purchased from MegaModz, the quality of the skins are amazing, well placed, no errors, no rips, they fit perfectly and the finish is pure quality. When you are using the custom created controller, and comparing it to the original, you will find that the functionality is exactly the same, the is literally no difference. You also never have to worry about fingerprint marks thanks to the skin being matt finished, this might be different based on the skin you choose when it comes to fingerprints.
The controller arrives in an Official Xbox Series X Controller box, so you know instantly you are not getting a third-grade pile of shit. You are getting a 100% Official controller, which is good news, as I have heard some horrific, stories where people have spent a lot and all they have gotten was a Chinese knock off.
I have tested this controller on a number of games but before I did that I needed to find a way to power the device. I could have simply used some AA batteries, but I find them to be rather obsolete these days, so I went out and purchased a Venom Dual Charge kit for two Xbox Series X Controllers.
I then set out to play some amazing games, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Cyberpunk 2077 (Bugs and all) Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition, MK 11, DiRT 5, Immortal Fynix Rising and much more. Under lockdown in wales, I was unable to take my new controller anywhere to showed it off over Facebook and Discord to my friends, and they all loved it. I personally have to agree, having a custom design is much better than the plain boring designed version you can purchase.
So after spending a little more for a custom Xbox Series X Controller was it worth it once again? I would say Yes, the extra you pay is pocket money for me, less than two hours of work and the final design is top-notch, just look at the picture above. Owning a PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch Pro from the company, all of the same great quality, what more could I have hoped for?
So we have come to my final thoughts, would I spend my money again at MegaModz? yes sure I would, I have no issues purchasing from them, I love my custom designed controllers. What I would love to see in future, is their already customised controllers on a UK/EU Marketplace place like Amazon to help bring down the costs for us. There is also the idea, of allowing users to create their own designs and have them placed on to these controllers, I am sure this is possible.
