Resident Evil 309 votes
The Resident Evil series has to be one of the biggest series in video game history. In fact the Resident Evil series became so popular it got a few movies made about it, though those movies weren’t well received. The basic premise of the Resident Evil story of the first game (1996) is that there have been murders report in Raccoon City, the victims show signs that the attacker has eaten part of the victims. S.T.A.R.S or Special Tactics And Rescue Service look into the case. They then face the grim realisation, they are dealing with zombies.
The Walking Dead 219 votes
Referring to the TellTale version and not the god-awful Activision version. The Walking Dead is based off the Walking Dead universe you see in the original comics and TV-show. The Telltales Walking Dead is a point and click episodic game where you will take control of the protagonist Lee (For the first game) and a young girl called Clementine (For the second game). The game is heavily based on story over gameplay, some might see this as a bad thing. You either love or hate the Walking Dead game.
Silent Hill 141 votes
Originally released in 1999, Silent Hill is a horror game classic. You play as Harry Mason, searching for his lost daughter named Cheryl. There’s only one catch… the town is full of monsters looking for blood. The gameplay itself is mainly combat/puzzle solving/exploration and uses 3rd person view. The game itself doesn’t have a HUD (Heads-up-Display), this makes it harder to judge how much health you have left, which in tense situations means you feel even more tensed. The game series is still going on to this day, the most recent release was in 2012/13.
Alien: Isolation 77 votes
Alien Isolation is an action-adventure, stealth and survival horror game. Released in 2014 Isolation follows the event of the 1979 film it’s based on, 15 years in the future. You play as Amanda Ripley, the daughter of Ellen Ripley from the original movie. The game, sadly, developed a reputation of being glitch, which did take away the horror factor for many players. However the story is solid as so too is the gameplay unless you come across a glitch.
Dead Space 57 votes
The Dead Space series started in 2008 and ended in 2013, the main protagonist, Isaac Clarke, is an engineer in space on board the USG Ishimura. The year is 2058 and space mining is now a thing, Isaac finds himself on a ship that is being attacked by aliens. We won’t give any more spoilers. There are three games in the series, Dead Space 1 (2008), 2 (2011) and 3 (2013). Be aware, this game is not for the squeamish, this is far more violent than the other games on this list so far, don’t believe us? Play the first 5 minutes, alone, in the dark. Enjoy.
F.E.A.R. 46 votes
F.E.A.R or First Encounter Assault Recon, what makes this game stand out from the others on this list is that the main character, “Point Man” has superhuman reflexes. Meaning you will be able to slow down time with a game mechanic called “Reflex Time”. F.E.A.R is a first person shooter and has a wide range of fictional guns and beam guns. You’ll be working with Dealta Force in order to assassinate a man named Fettel. You will see plenty of science fiction and plenty of bloodied enemies.
Outlast 46 votes
Outlast is a survival horror game rather than a first person shooter or a point and click game. Being focused on story and presentation rather than combat. The main protagonist will have his parkour skills in order to get around the abandoned hospital as well as a camera, in fact the way the game has been designed, the camera will help a lot with visibility thanks to its night vision mode. The goal is to explore the abandoned hospital in order to collect notes, detailing the horrors that went on here. Just watch your back, the hospital might be abandoned by people, but it’s not empty.
The Last of Us 40 votes
The Last of Us shows us what would happen if zombies spread throughout America if it happened right now. The first 20 minutes of this game are shocking and heart-breaking as we watch Joel and his daughter leaving their home in order to find sanctuary. We then see Joel 20 years later! Be now workers as a smuggler and comes across a girl called Ellie whom he needs to smuggle and keep her safe from zombies and other people.
P.T. 34 votes
Directed by Hideo Kokima, famous for directing and writing the Metal Gear franchise, you know this game means business. Created as a first person, psychological, survival horror game, you will be walking around a house with no means to defend yourself. The game itself can be as short as 30 minutes, however this can extent to 5 hours depending on a certain point in the game. At the end of the game you will walk into Silent Hill, recognise the name?
Slender: The Eight Pages 31 votes
Walking through a dense forest in the middle of the night might not be the best idea you’ve ever had. Using a flashlight to explore your environment, scrabbling to find 8 pages which are scattered throughout the forest and surrounding area. As time goes on the forest seems to be getting thicker and you feel like someone or something is watching you. Slender Man is chasing you as you look for these 8 pages and is trying to stop you. With his blank face, long bodied suit and teleportation he can surprise you with relative ease if you don’t keep your guard up.
