World map re-imagined: If each country looked like their favourite video game

There is no denying that video games have seen a huge spike in interest all over the world in the past year. Product click data from idealo.co.uk revealed that in 2020, PlayStation sales were up 2,900%, and when the new Call of Duty: Warzone dropped, 30 million players entered the new Battle Royale mode in just 10 days.

In light of this, a new study by one of Europe’s leading price comparison sites idealo has used search volume data to create a world map, designed as if each country were its most searched for video game.

For this, it analysed search volume data for every country on the most popular video games of 2020, determining the most researched game, including answers for cheats, best players and game modes. It then calculated this data per capita to give a fair representation of the population.

idealo was able to source data from 94 countries, of which Fortnite or Minecraft were the most popular games in 92 of these. This only differed for Ghana where FIFA 2020 was the most popular, and Sri Lanka where they favoured Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
