POGs Online will see players collect the colourful discs that caused so many primary school scraps, use the ‘slammer’ to disrupt their opponent’s stack, and compete in an international leader-board. But, this time, it’ll all be via an app.
The app will use the latest AR technology to allow players to scan real-world items into the game to complete POG sets and unlock new content.
The technology is already being built following a round of angel investment and the team behind the resurrection of this playground favourite are today launching a crowd-funding campaign to get their 90s-dream over the finish line and into the hands of fans by September.
People who put their weight behind the campaign will receive a limited-edition Slammer that can be scanned into the app using AR and used to take on opponents in the game. Other perks up for grabs are POGs T-shirts and baseball caps. Some users will also be able to have their own bespoke character designed for them and put in to the final game.
Kids TV host Ortis Deley, who was a regular fixture on our screens during the 90s, has even been brought in to host the POGs comeback.
Life-long POGs fan and the brains behind the comeback, entrepreneur Sam Park, commented:
“I was a huge fan of POGs as a kid and put so much energy into cultivating my prized stack of discs! A group of friends and I were reminiscing about our favourite 90s games one evening and it sparked the idea to try and bring the game back, but this time making it digital.
“The new POGs game will be huge fun – combining the best of the original POGs craze with the most exciting modern-day tech such as AR. We’ve been working on this project for over a year and this crowd-funding campaign is the final piece in the puzzle needed to finalise the app build and release the game for people to enjoy. I can’t wait to get playing again!”
The game will be free to play and users will be able to compete with others around the world, including in global POG tournaments, where real-life prizes will be up for grabs.
The POGs Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign is live now.
