More than 13 million copies of Animal Crossing: New Horizons sold within the first six weeks of its release1 earlier this year, and new data shows online searches for ‘Animal Crossing’ have seen a staggering increase of 1,010% in the last 12 months.
To help those trying to get their island looking better than their friends one, online smartphone retailer, e2save, reveals the top five tips and tricks that every Animal Crossing fan needs to know:
1. Always pay off debts
The game’s non-official leader, Tom Nook, is well-known for helping players fund their way through an Animal Crossing game. The wealthy business raccoon puts a player in debt early on in the game, but players can work quickly to earn Bells to help create a bigger home.
The quicker players pay off their debt, the quicker Tom will build their home by adding extra rooms and floors – something that is crucial to help store items collected throughout the game.
2. Build up a tool collection
To progress through New Horizons, players will need to quickly build up their collection of tools to help craft their way through the game. The game automatically starts with players having a small collection, and to gain more tools, players can collect resources from around the island if they have a DIY recipe for them or purchase tools from Nook’s Cranny.
Once bought, tools can be used to fish, dig for fossils or chop down trees, as well as many other island activities
3. Collect all of the fruit
Fruit is an important part of any Animal Crossing game. Fruit can be collected to sell, eat, plant or trade throughout the game and in New Horizon, players are able to collect a variety including apples, oranges, cherries, pears, peaches and coconuts.
New for the New Horizons edition of Animal Crossing is the ability for fruit to give players super powers. When eaten, fruit can give characters a temporary boost in strength, which, if stored, can be used to cut down trees in one swing.
4. Keep your skills sharp on the go
Whilst gamers aren’t able to play New Horizons without owning a Nintendo Switch, they can still get involved with Animal Crossing on a mobile phone.
Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp is the game’s free mobile app offering a mini-version of the game. There are similarities between both the console game and the app, with gamers able to set up their own campsite with bells and run the usual errands such as gardening, fishing and collecting. The app is available on both iOS and Android, so players are still able to get their Animal Crossing fix without owning a Nintendo console.
5. Design the best island
As well as being able to collect fruit, meet new friends and fish, Animal Crossing is all about designing the best house and village. In New Horizons, gamers are transported to a desert island, rather than the usual rural village, for players to put their own stamp on a new environment.
With the ability for players to custom design and create their own homes and surroundings, online searches for ‘Animal Crossing design’ have seen an increase of 7,614% in the last year2, as well as searches for ‘Animal Crossing custom design’ rising by a huge 80,900%2.
Designing and building the perfect home is really popular within the Animal Crossing community. Tutorials from pro-gamers, such as TagBackTV, are a great way to help players get design inspiration and tips and tricks for tailoring their own surroundings to their individual tastes.
With players keen to showcase their creative talents, e2save has launched a competition to find the best designed Animal Crossing island, with a Google Home Mini up for grabs for the best in show.
Karl Middleton, mobile expert at e2save, said:
