Cyberpunk 2077 is the most overhyped game of the millennium, new research has revealed.
In the build-up to the one year anniversary of Cyberpunk 2077’s release, vpnoverview.com analysed Steam data to see which games have seen the biggest reduction in player count since their release dates, and found that Cyberpunk 2077 is top of the list, making it the most overhyped video game in the past 18 years.
Analysis of the data revealed that CD PROJEKT RED’s latest release has seen the biggest percentage change in player count, losing more than 99% of the original player base in just under a year. It had one of the biggest releases in gaming history with more than a million people playing on the first day. From the 1,054,338 people playing on the first day, only 9,561 continue to play the game today.

Dota Underlords comes in at second on the list, with the game seeing a 98.3% drop in player count since its release in 2019. The most recent release in the Dota franchise had more than 200,000 players on release day, but has lost over 198,000 since then, with the current number standing at 3,377.
Coming in at third on the list is No Man’s Sky, which has lost 97% of its players since release back in 2016. No Man’s Sky launched to considerable fan excitement, with 212,613 people playing the game at release, but that number quickly went down and the title now gets 6,214 players a day.
Total War: THREE KINGDOMS is fourth on the list, where only 3.18% of the original players still play the game currently. The turn-based strategy game has seen a reduction of 186,192 players since its release in 2019.

A spokesperson for vpnoverview.com commented on the study, saying: “Each of the games on this list had hundreds of thousands of fans around the world eagerly awaiting their launch date, so it’s fascinating to see how they have fared over time. The data illustrates that it is extremely difficult to live up the hype, especially when that brings in more than one million players.”
