You’ve met Connor, now meet the Wolf inside.
Calling all members of the brotherhood, we need your help taking down the evil King George of the no longer free nation of the United States of America.
Ubisoft have released the first episode of the Assassin’s Creed 3 DLC titles; The Tyranny of King George – ‘The Infamy’. ‘The Betrayal’ and ‘The Redemption’ will soon follow.
Now, when it comes to video game franchises and the release of downloadable content, there is always a small part of me that thinks that “great, this will just a lazy and pointless piece of work that has only been put together because the content didn’t fit into the main game and has been released just to squeeze fans of yet more of their money.“
But in this instance, it does not feel like this. It actually feels like this is a positive extension of something that is something so brilliant in Assassin’s Creed 3.In this first episode of three, living another part of Connor’s storied life is your role.
Being a canon of the main game, it offers a chance to play through a version of events that contradicts what really happened once George Washington had defeated the Red Coats.
So, be prepared for some confusing questions to arise within the first 10 minutes of game-play. A question like; why is George Washington evil? What is the deal with Connor’s mother, isn’t she dead? Before you scream, “she died under heap of burning wood” just stop, I know. But hey, how often has the AC series made complete sense? Case and point.
The action is instantly immersive and throws you into the action with little warning. Taking on multiply bad guys pulling off impressive killing sequences with a variety weapons brings you straight back to the place you were at when you completed the main storyline.
Note: if you have not played the game for an extended amount, be prepared to have a bad time. The relentless attacks of Blue Coats will dominate you, so be sure to re-familiarise yourself with the controls before playing.
Many DLC’s have the problem of not adding anything new or interesting, so the overall product feels stale and boring to play. This however, has a series of exciting new abilities that Connor can use to aid him in his quests.
The power of the Wolf gives Connor the ability to completely conceal himself in order to sneak up on guards, eavesdrop on conversations and infiltrate a fort without being detected. Being invisible does drain health similar to how the Apple of Eden drained Ezio’s power in previous games, so the ability does come at a cost.
After a while you could be forgiven for feeling that being invisible may actually make the missions too easy. This could be true, but the missions are designed in such a way that they still offer a unique challenge. It is up to the player to find the challenges that are they and adapt playing style and method in order to complete a task.
The Tyranny of King George – ‘The Infamy’, offers something for the hardcore AC fans that changes game-play enough to make purchasing it a viable idea.
At a cost of 800 MS points, it is worth the 2 hour playtime, just because the new edition alone. If you buy the season pass, this and the next two instalments will be cheaper overall. Be sure to enjoy this and unlocking the true potential of the animal within.
