Back when I first played Bulwark Falconeer Chronicles before it became Bulwark Evolution, I was overwhelmed at how a solo indie developer “Tomas Sala” was able to pull off such an awesome game when you see big companies with more than one staff member struggling to release and maintain decent games nowadays.
Then you fast forward a few months and Wired Productions announce the launch of Bulwark Evolution on the Xbox and PlayStation consoles as well as additional PC Platforms. This free update that has finally made its way to the console after a successful launch on Steam brings a whole load of innovative gameplay mechanics, a new layer of depth, and strategy as it expands the Bulwark experience even more. The game was already tons of fun and had me hooked from the very first time I loaded it up.
So, I was very excited when I read the announcement that the console player would be getting the Evolution content. There is some DLC that has come over as well but I have yet to pick that up and play it. So after a quick update, I was able to dive once again into The Great Ursee and see what was new.
Based on feedback that players provided Bulwark Evolution features new ways to play, each mode providing a different experience. You have the Original mode, Free Build Mode, and Total Conquest Mode. These modes offer so much variation when it comes to the game that it fuels countless hours of fun.
The original experience is nice to play to get your bearings. Seeing as I have had the game for a while now, I have managed to get through the different stages and moved onto mainly playing the free build mode. This mode is for the players who like to sit back and let their creativity run wild. This mode is where I feel most at ease as it allows me to enjoy the building aspects without the conflict and challenges from the standard modes.
The Great Ursee is so much more fun to explore when you haven’t got the consent fear of being raided and attacked. However, it does allow your creativity to flourish as some of the locations you can find and build on are amazing. Then we welcome the Total Conquest mode. This is for those who enjoy the true Bulwark experience, the beacons are lit and there is all-out war. In this new mode, you start at war with all the factions.
A world war but no one is on anyone’s side. To make it worse there is no diplomacy and the scale at which raids happen is like nothing you have seen before. If you are a lover of the free build mode like me then Total Conquest throws everything out of the water and plunges you into all-out chaos as you will need to plan, be strategic, and know that buildings aren’t going to win this fight.
It was a nice surprise to get this additional mode on the console and even more joy that it was a free update. The Great Ursee has never been more fun and the fact that the open-world content has doubled and there are a lot of new mechanics it has never been a better time to jump back with Bulwark Evolution if you have not played it in a while.
Some new fortresses and flagships can be unlocked and battles feel a lot more epic and deadlier. With this update, we get loads of other fixes and updates which make the game play a lot smoother and I love the different mechanics that help make the game feel fresh again.
Tomas Sala is a clear example of when a dev truly loves the game & world they have created. It started with The Falconer and moved on to Bulwark Evolution. They are two different games which is even more incredible.
I would highly recommend Bulwark Evolution to any new player, in my first coverage when it was Bulwark Chronicles I enjoyed it the first time around then with this update and new mode it feels like a new spark has been lit for the game and it has seemed myself sink even more hours into what is now know as Bulwark Evolution. I have been eager to try out The Falconeer to see how that plays out and to dive into the Great Ursee universe even more but for now, I will continue trying to Conquer the Total Conquest mode and in my downtime enjoy this game marvellous free building mode.
