First things first packaging and display
The mouse arrived well packaged in a very well designed box, with a picture of the mouse on the front and all the technical specifications you would expect on the back. The front came with a flip open view panel, which allowed you to view the mouse in its boxed environment.
When opened up, the mouse is very well protected and comes with a small manual, did not see any CD for software, which is a good sign that something will need to be downloaded, so you can control the Mouse Buttons and Macro or assigns the keys.
The Design
The 200M Mouse comes with a rubberized coating that can prevent slipping and sliding while using the mouse for intensive gaming. The wheel and Logo light up with a nice orange glow. All the buttons on the mouse use Omron switches, *(Omron switches’ have a micro contact gap and operate at the specified movement and force using a snap-action mechanism)
The mouse wheel is ridged in design and is also clickable and can be used as a middle mouse button, just below the mouse wheel is the ‘On the fly DPI Adjustment button’ which allow you to flip between 800/1600 and 2000DPI.
On the side are two thumb buttons pre-set as forward and backwards, underneath we have in use gaming grade mouse feel and a 2000DPI precision Gaming Laser. Finally, something we see with many mice now, a braided cable which spots your mouse from tangling up, attached to the end is a Gold Plated USB connection.
Software
This is a first for me to say this, from RAZER to Steelseries and the Budget Gaming Peripherals Element Gaming all have dedicated software to macro and control aspects of the mouse, keyboard or headset. This device, however The COUGAR 200M does not come or use any software its all built in.
Now is COUGAR did create a software program for this device you would be able to create macros, and assigns the buttons on the mouse to certain keys on the keyboard, this can make gaming more accessible and fun. I am a bit on the edge regarding this as every mouse I have ever used I have been able to assign and macro buttons, this is the one thing I miss with this mouse and wish to have available.
Personal use
As anyone that knows my reviews, when it comes to gaming peripherals I am a pure gamer, and I own all the top end peripherals and the latest games, so with this mouse I decided to test it with the following titles, ‘Dying Light’ from Developers ‘Techland’, Dragon Age Inquisition’ from the Developers ‘Bioware’, ‘Far Cry 4’ and Assassin Creed Unity’ from the Developers ‘Ubisoft’.
So without software, to program the buttons or assign them, did effect my fun while playing any of the games, not really I still enjoyed them. ‘Dragon Age Inquisition’ was a bit of a bitch to get used to playing. As I prefer the use of the side buttons from my ‘RAZER Chroma Wireless Naga Gaming Mouse’, which makes it easier to cast spells from the action bar. Other than that game ‘Far Cry 4’ and ‘Assassins Creed Unity’ did not really require any sort of Macro’s or buttons assigning, the games played will and the mouse performed to what I expected.
Now the mouse performed well to what I expected, but for me 2000dpi took some time to get used to, as I am used to using a mouse set at 2600dpi. I found I was running my mouse at max DPI all the time and never used the ‘On the fly’ button to decrease the DPI settings.
The mouse runs very smoothly over the mouse mat I used, which is the ‘Razer Goliathus Speed Gaming Mouse Mat’ – Medium, so we can safely say that the Gaming Grade mouse feet work very well and did not hinder or ruin my premium mat. The Gaming Grade Laser also tracked well on the mat, and I did not experience any jumps or pauses in performance.
When it came to the lights, there was nothing that you can do to change the way they worked, for example, breathing effect or flashing effect, they were simply on and that’s it.
I found the rubberized coating on the mouse worked just as well as the premium products I own, my finger felt comfortable and did not slide all over the place, I have also seen the reduction of sweat build up, which tend to see on non rubberized mice. Which is good as I tended to spend more time cleaning the mouse of sweat that playing games.
Final Thoughts.
So the mouse performs well, that we know, there is no software to fiddle around with, you cannot assign or macro the buttons. The mouse glides well across the premium mouse mats, the tracking of the gaming grade laser is perfect, there is nothing much to complain about. I would prefer some type of software so I can at least assign keys for ease of use, with games that have an action bar, I would also prefer and higher DPI other than that this mouse is a great budget Gaming Grade Mouse, from COUGAR.
