Research from a leading fandom website has discovered that Minecraft is the world’s most popular fandom, followed by Pokémon and Animal Crossing. Despite Pokémon grossing $88.9bn more than the sandbox video game, Minecraft has accrued 1.33 million more signups over the past year than the Japanese media franchise, which ultimately secured its crown as the top fandom. To conduct the research the website tracked Reddit, Google Search Term and hashtag data to discover the 50 biggest fandoms from the past 12 months.
Following worldwide lockdowns that have resulted in an influx of global fandom supporters, a leading fandom website has released a list of the world’s biggest fandoms, after analyzing subreddit sign-ups, Google Trends search term and social media hashtag data.
FandomSpot.com’s research discovered that Minecraft is the world’s most popular fandom, followed by Pokémon and Animal Crossing to round off the top three. Despite Pokémon grossing $88.9bn since its launch in 1996, more than any other media franchise, Minecraft has accrued 1.33 million more signups over the past year than the Japanese media franchise, securing its crown as the world’s biggest fandom.
Each fandom was assigned its own unique score, based on three metrics; the number of subreddit sign-ups, Google Trends search term and social media hashtag data, relating to each fandom since March 2020. The number of new users on each fandom’s subreddit was given the most weighting in the formula.
The world’s 10 biggest fandoms with their popularity score are:
- Minecraft – 34,770
- Pokémon – 14,705
- Animal Crossing – 13,332
- Dungeons & Dragons – 10,922
- Zelda – 9,954
- Cyberpunk 2077 – 9,718
- Marvel Studios – 9,101
- Rick & Morty – 8,357
- The Last Airbender – 7,551

FandomSpot.com is the best site to browse all fandom content for anything imaginable. From games, movies, and TV shows to anime and even old-school memorabilia. The platform has been created to bring passionate people together to celebrate their fandoms in every possible way.
Alyssa Celatti of FandomSpot.com, said,
“When we launched FandomSpot we wanted to create a community where people all over the globe could come together not only to enjoy their own fandom, but also to potentially find a new one. When the pandemic hit we were worried about how it would affect people’s lives, and whether it would have a negative effect on fandoms around the world. But, I’m happy to say we were wrong! Over the past 12 to 13 months we’ve seen a huge influx of people coming to our site, and if you look at subReddit registrations across the entirety of our list, every single one has seen a massive uptake in users.
“That’s why we decided to create this list – to get to the bottom of which fandom is the world’s biggest in 2021. After the research, we were unsurprised to see that Minecraft has taken the crown this year, it’s an iconic game that has one of the strongest most engaged communities in the world, and we’ll be interested to see whether it can hold on to the title next year.”
