Now it’s time for the sales and marketing and of course unboxing.
From what you can see from the images Edifier has gone for style and minimalistic, to entice the high-end user to look over their product, the people that look for unique, design and of course quality, regardless of the price, or just someone looking for something special. The only thing on the front packaging is the two speakers from a side perspective, the colour of the unit, the name of the unit, Bluetooth and ‘IF’ Product Design Award 2014.
On the back again it’s very minimal, and down to the facts, just the specifications and features in 7 different languages and two images of how best to use the speakers, well what they can look like next to different devices, PC and a TV.
Unboxing
Just look at the image to see how well packaged these are, even the speakers are in some sort of soft bag and strapped up at the top with rope, the remote is stuck down and in a plastic bag (Batteries not required) there is already one installed. The Instructions are packaged up to the lid, sealed and stuck down with velcro. For cables, you get a power brick, not too small, not too big. 3.5mm Audio Cable and a cable to attach the right speaker to left speaker, as mine was a US version if came with a US plug, but Edifier were nice enough to supply a UK plug as well.
These speakers are a joy to look at from the top where it has a silk dome tweeter, that can create some sweet high-end audio experiences, then below that houses a powerful mid-range driver, that churns out some great mids, moving around to the back we have two passive Bass Radiators that create some great bass to a degree. On the front of the speaker, you have a LED notifying if the speaker is on or off and what connection you are currently using, on the side of the right speaker you have some media controls, volume up, down and speaker on or off. These media controls are only found on the right speaker leaving the left speaker blank.
I found the media controls on the speaker to be a bit temperamental at times and would rather use the remote control instead, but I did find, that if you put your hand over all three media keys, the speakers will mute. Since the left speaker is simply an addon, everything is controlled, connected and powered through the right speaker.
Setting up was easy, unbox, attach the cable from the right speaker to the left, attach the power cable then either choose Bluetooth or 3.5mm audio connection.
Choosing Bluetooth and connecting it up to your device is easy, as the speakers are always broadcasting its identifier, making it a painless connection experience, which is good as I hate it when you have to press buttons to pair.
The sound quality is great and vibrant, they are certainly not for Bass heads, like me, to a degree, as I do love my bass music when playing some games, but I also love my classic rock tracks from the 80s and 90s. But what do you expect the bass radiators on the back are small, if you want bass then you would go for something with a big subwoofer attached to two separate speakers or more. When listening to Instrumental music or my Classic rock tracks, I found the sound was fantastic, an absolute pleasure to experience.
Now comes the issues, first the small minor one, fingerprints, as these are glossy, please expect to get fingerprints on them, but do not worry, Edifier is nice enough to supply you with a micro fibre cloth to help you remove those greasy prints off your new baby. If you are anything like me, you will be using the remote, so fingerprints after the first install will not be an issue.
Then you have sound, BLUETOOTH, connecting is great, but the sound is a different issue, yes it sounds OK, but plugging these speakers through a 3.5mm audio cable into your system and damn, the sound is much better, and I mean MUCH MUCH BETTER. Everything via Bluetooth just seems wrong, like bass, treble and everything in-between just seems boosted and just not set correctly and of course, there is no way to control this, something that has been an issue with all Bluetooth speakers.
Running them through the 3.5mm audio cable from your, say PC, wow, what an improvement, maybe this is because the sound is being controlled by your software on your system instead of the default settings within the speakers. I was even able to replicate Digital Surround Sound thanks to Nahimic 2 software. These speakers need software, software that can be download via an app store for mobile user and website for PC users, that will allow the user to set up a profile suited to their preference and taste and send/save those settings to the speaker, so when the user chooses to go Bluetooth, the speakers onboard memory will have the setting stored and can produce the sound quality you desire through the onboard controller.
Final thoughts, ignoring the Bluetooth issues, as I always run speakers off an audio cable, as I know from my previous experience, sound is going to be better, these speakers look gorgeous, sexy, stylistic and fashionable, the sound is absolutely great, mid to highs are unbelievably vibrant and the Bass is what you expect, just not BOOM BOOM BOOM, which sees the room rumbling. Still, you can not ignore the Bluetooth sound issues, and Edifier really pushing this aspect on their website, so I am going to score these speakers a 9/10.
If you are interested in bass and want the same looks and design as these, then check out the Luna E – THX-certified Active Speaker System as this setup has a huge Bass subwoofer, I hope to bring you a review of those one day, as I really wish to see how Edifier can bring us BASS as well as great sound.
