Flexispot E5 Standing Desk Review

In this review, I am taking a look at the Flexispot E5 Standing Desk (also known as the E5 Ergonomic Standing Desk) If you have been following me you already know that this is not my first desk to review. I have actually reviewed a number of desks in the past and each one had its merits along with a number of issues. So why another desk? really why? because there is sometimes something better just around the corner, maybe?

Do you want to be healthy?

So why would I want a standing desk? For one I am a gamer at heart and I prefer to sit on a chair while gaming. However, I also work from home from time to time.

There is also another reason since CORVID-19 hit the world many workers are now working from home, with this in mind, a standing desk is a perfect way to not only have the ability to work at home with comfort but to also provide health benefits. But what are these health benefits?

Packing, any good?

Now as this product can only be purchased online the packaging is not all that enticing as you can see from the image below. It just has a basic picture a phone number, the size and the brand.

So it comes down to the packaging, how did everything arrive? was anything damaged? was anything poorly packaged? Well to answer this in one word, I would use the term ‘PERFECT‘. Nothing was damaged, everything arrived safely, and everything was well packed, even came with in-depth instructions for everything, well almost everything.

So the first item I unpacked was the desktop for the standing desk and to my delight, it was 2.5cm thick, it was all-black, textured so will not scratch that easily and was 140 x 70cm in overall dimensions. It was pretty heavy as well, now there are down points, there are no cable management holes like you see on many desks of late and it will pick up your greasy sweety hands as you can clearly see from the images below.

Now for one of the accessories that I requested, a CPU Holder (PC Case Holder which costs £39.99.

Now my base unit is 53CM tall and this easily fits my unit comfortably with a little headroom for say around 54cm base unit, I do not recommend anything taller. Once my PC is fitted into the unit, I felt it was safe, secure and off the ground allowing more air to flow through the system. The ‘CPU HOLDER CH2‘ which is its full name is well built, heavy and does its job, expanding virtually and horizontally.

Frame and Legs

The frame and legs are constructed using Solid steel with rounded edges which will protect your little ones running around the room from accidental injuries. The legs can hold a max weight of 125KG which is more than enough for any avid gamer or office user. They also come coated with a stain and scratch-resistant coating.

The height can adjust to ranges from 620mm-1250mm which is high enough for the majority of us, and finally, they come in white, black and grey when it comes to the choice of colour.

The legs look like this (See image above) they are the heaviest part of the whole build and they also hold to the motor which will need to be plugged into the Control Box. What is the Control Box?

What is the Control Box? It is a small power brick that is attached to the underside of the desk frame see images below;

Everything else you can see below in the images, you have the feet that are rather long measuring 69cm. At first glance, you might think they offer NO grip as they are plastic feet on a Solid Steel frame, but trust me I have mine on laminated flooring and the desk does not move anywhere. Then we have what Flexispot call the baffle or their form of cable management that attached to the underside of the desk see pic 1. The final part is what I am calling Leg and Frame edging, this is a simple piece of Solid Steel built and designed in a way that hides the joints at the top of the leg and mainframe, see PIC 2 for more details

Now you will need to put everything together but it is not that hard and comes with a handy instruction manual to guide you. Everything is more or less common sense, as there are holes placed on the desktop for all the parts, so you cannot make a mistake.

The BUILD

The one thing you learn about building desks is they are sometimes a nightmare, and sometimes easy, standing desks are in between, due to their weight and the number of parts. The Flexidesk E5 Standing Desk took after 45mins to build from unboxing, setting up all parts, building and testing. Then we have to add the CPU HOLDER CH2 to the desk, mount arms for monitors and working out the best way to cable manage the whole thing.

Now you have built the Desk how easy is it to use, well it is really self-explanatory. Using the control system, press up and down to go up and down, obviously and click M then one of the preset save slots 1, 2, standing or sitting buttons to save the desired height.

There is also a handy child lock feature for us parents working from home, just press the M key till it flashes one and the icon turns blue, to remove the child lock, just hold the M buttons for 5 secs.

This is the fun part talking about the product, putting in my recommendations and then giving you my final thoughts, so let us get right to it.

I am going to start this section by simply saying this product is good, but it does lack some common cable management found within other desks.

The top is matt black with a dimple effect, this will help stop scratched and provide a better surface to work on. I found when I was using a gloss surface worktop, it ended up with loads of scratches from general use and even from the metal bracelet. With this surface, it was not that present. I did find out that my sweaty, greasy hands would be seen all over the worktop, my fault, yes, I guess I shall be using Mr Sheen Furniture Polish to add a layer of protection from this issue of mine.

The desk has rounded edges front and back, and a dimpled surface, so your peripherals, coasters and other items should have no problem staying on the desk. Now, where are the cable management routing holes? there is none, there is nowhere to manage your cables. Every cable will just do down the back, for someone that likes to keep this tidy, you might want to look for something online to help mitigate this.

Also maybe even offer a cable tray on the back, so we can place our power block inside and route all cables to that, this would be a great way to also cable manage. But you can use a cable spine which is for desks that can alter in height, they are great as you can route all your cables through them and make under your desk look rather clean and tidy. How they work is simple, one end gets screwed under the desk, while the other end is weighted down, you can also alter the length to your designed preference, just by removing segments that are interlocked.

Yes, some cables will not reach all the way to it, but the majority will. I managed to route my keyboard cable, mouse, mouse mat which has RGB lights, monitor power cables, camera, monitor USB power, monitor display port connections, even the power cord for the desk. If it was not for that cable spine under my desk it would be a nightmare and very dangerous if you had a little one running around your office or spare room when you are working from home or simply playing games. I would 100% recommend you purchase a cable tidy device if you have little children who like to pull on everything, best to be safe than sorry, here is a link to one on Amazon if interested.

The one defining feature that sells this desk is?

A fully adjustable standing desk with height settings to suit a range of sit-standing needs which features a smooth, silent dual-motor system and by golly its does exactly what it says.

When they say smooth and silent its certainly is, and when you have a little one sleeping while you are working the last thing you need a noisy motor going off every time you move from standing to sitting. This is an odd request though, there are almost see-through plastic sections on the legs that I would have loved to have seen these turn white when going up and down, it is just a cosmetic feature to make it stand out. not really required.

The health benefits of having a standing desk stand out a mile, who would not want to live a little longer, help lower the risk of weight gain, lower your blood sugar levels, and reduce back pain which I can tell you now sitting on a chair day in day out the desk can really.

Overall what do I think of this desk?

What do you think? Health benefits, hold a good amount of weight, design and quality is ok, the only issues are cable management. You will be needing to purchase a cable tray or cable spine and no one wants an untidy desk right?

So my Recommendations, I would like to see is a little easier, cable routing on the desk, as this is built for office use maybe a USB hub or Wireless Charger, and finally a curved front for convenience.
