A 16-bit candle flame dances atop a crate on her side of the room. From its light, we see a bottle of rum and a message, scrawled on the wall: ‘hide in the shadows. The game has started. Hide. The cultists are coming.
Here We Come is a nostalgia-laced, bone-chilling take on the childhood pastime Hide and Seek. Having been woken in a dark, candlelit room, players must hide from crazed cultists, worshippers of The Beast. These masked lunatics stalk the halls and rooms of the map, toying with players for their own amusement.
Legend has it that one unfortunate soul stumbled across Here We Come in an abandoned arcade. The naive adventurer was drawn to the glow of the game cabinet, the only one in the room lit up, the careless intruder didn’t spy that despite its bright, crackling screen, the machine wasn’t plugged in. They tried their hand at Here We Come but lost and unleashed a terrible curse: spawning the game villains into the real world where they would play their murderous game of hide and seek in real life on an endless loop.
Free to play online at The League of Darkness, Kraken hunters across the country are being challenged to demonstrate their hiding abilities and in turn, fight to banish the cultists back into the game; the more gamers taking part, the more chance we have of breaking the curse. Players with the highest scores at 23:59PM on 30th November will go into the draw to win their very own Kraken Rum branded retro arcade machine, complete with 10,000+ classic games, featuring everything from PS2 favourites to Sega icons.
Brave gamers can build their score by remaining hidden for as long as possible, adding bonus points by collecting bottles of The Kraken Rum as they sneak around the dingy lair they find themselves in. The longer you survive, the greater access you’ll have to the spooky silo the cultists have taken over. Cowering between crates, the loud creaking of opening doors will alert players to the newly opened areas.
Inspired in aesthetic by the much-adored DOOM and taking notes from the inimitable stealth series, Metal Gear Solid, this game is a trip down memory lane in more ways than one; harking back to beloved video games of years gone by and putting a terrifying twist on the childhood playground favourite Hide and Seek.
A fleet of Kraken Rum branded arcade machines, loaded up with Here We Come, will be touring the country in November as part of this year’s Kraken Screamfest event. The game is also available to play online at www.leagueofdarkness.co.uk/herewecome
An immersive horror experience replicating the video game in real life took place in London this past October. The Ditch in Shoreditch played host to an adults-only game of Hide and Seek where the all too real masked cultists from the game seeked naïve players in the real world as they tried to hide for as long as possible in all manner of dark and claustrophobic places.
