I have never thought that I would be reviewing a keypad and a mouse for use with a console, but here I am with the Gamesir VX2 Aimswitch Gaming Keypad and Mouse. For this review, I shall be using the device on the Nintendo Switch to play such games as the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Witcher 3 and PC to play such games as Devil May Cry 5 and Skyrim.
First I need to question one thing, why would you be looking for one of these? As console gamers, we primarily use a controller to play games as they are more convenient. A keyboard and mouse is not as convenient and requires the use of a flat surface so you can place the peripherals upon. Console gamers are also more likely to play their games on a couch, bed or a chair. So for me, being a Nintendo Switch gamer, I do tend to play my games while sitting down on my couch or through handheld mode, So I wonder HOW I am going to use this device comfortably?
But before we go that far, let’s look at how Gamesir sell this to you?
So from the front, you instantly know that this is a keypad and if you take a better look it comes with a mouse and a receiver, so is this fully wireless? It does not say on the front, so does it say anything on the back? Thankfully it does as Gamesir note some of the keypads features which include the following;
TTC mechanical Red switches, enable up to 50 million clicks, Here is some more information about the TTC Switch
‘TTC switches are, like their name implies, solid RED in colour. These SMD LED-compatible switches come in your choice of linear, tactile, or clicky—all with a different switch weight, depending how much pressure you like to type with. All switches are plate mounted with a 3-pin construction’
and here are the tech features for the actual key
- TTC
- Plate mount
- Red housing and stem
- Linear (60 g), Clicky (70 g), and Tactile (45 g)
- Force listed is actuation force +/- 15
- SMD LED compatible
- 3 pin
Back to the product and its features noted on the back;
- An integrated panel made of aluminium alloy
- 7-key Rollover, Anti-Ghosting with anti-skid texture design, what to know a little more about 7 Key- rollover? and not sure what Anti-ghosting is all about, let me enlighten you.
Rollover is the ability of a keyboard to correctly handle several simultaneous keystrokes and anyone time.
Anti–ghosting means you can press many keys at the same time and have them all register. On keyboards, without anti–ghosting, there is a limit to how many keys you can press at once.
- Ultra-precise CNC procedure, which most likely means nothing to us common folk, but it away a product is built with machines, but I found this info online;
CNC machining is a manufacturing process in which pre-programmed computer software dictates the movement of factory tools and machinery. The process can be used to control a range of complex machinery, from grinders and lathes to mills and routers
- Agility x 2.4GHz wireless ultra-low latency technology – wondering what this means as well, again I shall enlighten you;
Ultra low latency describes a computer network that is optimized to process a very high volume of data packets with an extraordinarily low tolerance for delay (latency)
- An Alps ultra-thin 3D joystick- that’s the cool little joystick you can see on the bottom right of the keypad.
- Highly customisable for each game via G-Crux, this is the software used to program the key to each game you want to play, or just program the buttons on your controller to certain keys on the keypad and mouse. You can download that here.
- RGB backlight with 16.8 million colours to choose from.
We then have some features for the mouse which include the following
- Air cable which simply means – is an insulated cable usually containing all conductors required for an electrical distribution system.
- Ultralight skeleton design
- Colourful RGB Lighting
- Flagship Mouse Sensor the PMW3360 – this is the sensor used to communicate between the mouse and the computer or device.
This sensor offers all the following
- High-end gaming integrated chip in 16-pin molded lead‐frame DIP package
- Designed to deliver high speed, high accuracy and high-resolution gaming experience
- Contains navigation chip and infrared LED
- With self‐adjusting variable frame rate algorithm to enable wireless gaming application
- Selectable lift detection height
So that was all the sales patter on the product and I must admit some of the information I had NO idea what they meant or what they were trying to sell me, like the Ultra-precise CNC procedure, TTC mechanical Red switches and Air Cable. I had to research with Google but if you were in a store ready to buy this, there would be no chance of you doing the same. I recon features like ergonomically designed, one-hand control, wrist rest for comfortable use, fully programmable keys things like that make more sense to a gamer, and I feel would make more sense as sales information.
Now the outside packaging is amazing, sales patter needs a little work, and Gamesir has even included a little handle so no need to purchase a bag. But what does it look like inside have they packaged it well?
and the simple answer is yes. The keypad is well packaged behind plastic that hugs the device from anyone accidentally dropping the box and the mouse and receiver are also packaged underneath again nicely hugged.
So inside the actual box, you get the keypad, receiver, mouse, stickers, charger cable and a very good and in-depth instruction manual, which you do not normally see, as many companies prefer to give you a link to view a manual online to save money.
When it comes to design Gamesir have it down, both products have been designed very well, right down to the RGB lighting. So let us take a closer look at the Gamesir keypad
The keypad is more or less half the size of a keyboard if the keyboard did not have a number pad as well. There are five rubber grips underneath to help with grip and a small joystick. Using the G-Crux application on your mobile you can re-program every key and button on the mouse and keypad to your desired layout. If you missed the link address to download G-Crux here it is again http://www.xiaoji.com/firmware/gamesir-ota/index_en.html
G-Crux application images below
To get G-Crux connected to your Gamesir VX2 Aimswitch all you need to do it press FN + F4 while the application is searching for the device (Make sure Bluetooth is on) G-Crux has a number of default configurations already set up for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. I found default one for the Nintendo Switch perfect for any game I chucked at it. But if the default settings are not suitable for you, you can easily change every key and button, or create your own personal configuration, name it, save it and send the configuration to the Gamesir VX2 Aimswitch. You can also mess around with the mouse settings from its response rate and sensitivity, keypad settings, like the input lag and joystick settings like its deadzone. Gamesir have gone to town when it comes to this application, only one thing missing which I would have loved to have seen, the ability to record key inputs and create macros to assigns to keys.
So as you can see that the VX2 Aimswitch offers a lot when used in conjunction with the G-Crux application. The functionality or should I say ease of use does not stop there, there a number of keys that when used in conjunction with the FN key, can control the volume, the RGB Lighting effects, and if for some reason your VX2 Aimswitch loses its connection, you can press FN + F5 to reconnect.
I guess you want to see these lighting effects? I got you covered in this video below.
Taking a look at the keys, the actual actuation force required to activate a key is little to nothing and it is rather quiet compared to other mechanical keys I have used in the past including the Cherry MX Key.
To show you what the keys sound like I have created a video, which you can view below.
The only item I have not talked about much is the mouse, as there is not much to say, it is very light, has a total of 5 buttons, left and right, two on the left-hand side and the mouse scroll acts as the fifth. The scroll itself offers a nice tactile bump each time you move it, also has small bumps across it for grip. There are three rubber grips underneath to help the mouse slide across a surface, like a mouse mat, and a DPI button on top to control the mouse sensitivity. One thing I always say is good to have with any peripheral is a braided cable, and its good to see Gamesir has used just that.
A cable? but you said it was wireless, the keypad is wireless, but the mouse attaches to the side of the keypad.
There is a wireless receiver, charger cable and a USB Type C connector: everything is used, just read the instructions to find out how.
Now that was a lot to go through I must admit, but this is the crucial part now, was the Gamesir VX2 Aimswitch any good? Well connecting the device up to my PC was easy and worked out of the box and simply worked with every game I chucked at it. Then I had the Nintendo Switch, and again follow the instructions and it simply worked. I did choose to use the G-Crux application and chose default 1 with no changes. I played Darksiders 1 and 2 along with Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the wild and many more new games like The Witcher 3 and Astral Chain, and I am happy to say everything worked.
However, I had an issue, as a console gamer I chill on my sofa, so how do I comfortably use this device? OK, I can rest the keypad on my thigh, not a problem, but the mouse on the seat, it is not going to work that well and I need it too. So how do you set up the device? Well, you simply need a flat surface to place them on, like PC Gamers, they have a desk, you will need similar, for at least the mouse. There is something out there for console gamers it’s called the Couchmaster which you can buy from Amazon. They are not cheap, I must admit, and there are most likely cheaper variants out there, so have a look around or even experiment at home.
So overall what do I think, I am going to make this short, it is bloody amazing, apart from not offering the ability to create macros and assign them to keys and wondering how is the best way to use the device if you are chilling on a sofa, bed or chair.
