How Do I Unlock Fishing in Genshin Impact?
If you’ve been scratching your head for a way to try out the new fishing system, hold your horses. First, you’ll need to accept and complete the Exploding Population quest.
To start the quest, speak with Katheryne in Mondstadt and accept the Exploding Population quest she gives you. You can find the city of Mondstadt in the northeast region of Teyvat. Katheryne is just inside the city gates, in a booth that looks like an information counter. Just follow the simple instructions, which will walk you through how the fishing system works.
Once you’ve finished this quest, you can start fishing in any body of water where you see rippling water and fish.
How Does Genshin Impact Fishing Work?
You can only fish at specific Fishing Points, which are spots of rippling water found in bodies of water like lakes, ponds, rivers, etc. Interact with a Fishing Point and select your rod and the type of bait you want to use. This will begin the fishing mini-game.
The fishing mini-game involves placing bait on your hook and casting it into the water. Once you’ve selected the rod and bait you want to use, a circle indicator will appear in the water in front of you. This indicator is where you will cast your hook.
Once a fish has taken the bait, it’s time to reel it in. A bar will appear at the top of your screen with a box that moves along it. All you have to do is keep the bright yellow line within the box as it slides across the bar until the fish tires out.
This yellow box will slide across the green bar. Keep the bright yellow indicator (that looks like the letter ‘I’) within the box until the fish is tired out. The circle with a hook in the centre will slowly fill up. You can pull in the fish once the circle is full.
Each Fishing Spot contains different sets of fish for night and day.
The Fishing Spot will disappear once all available fish have been caught. New fish will respawn every three real-world days. Note that each fish is on its own reset timer, rather than the Fishing Point itself being on a timer. A Fishing Point will reappear when at least one fish has respawned.
Fish Display Limit
“Fish Display Limit” is a term for the in-game phenomenon wherein the game’s engine visually displays fewer fish than there actually are in a Fishing Point. In other words, a Fishing Spot usually holds more fish than it’s actually showing you.
New fish will spawn to replace any fish you catch until the Fishing Spot has run out of fish.
The Genshin Impact wiki has a handy Genshin Impact Fishing Points table that lists all the Fishing Spots in Genshin Impact, their Fish Display Limits, and how much total fish they can actually hold.
Unlocking All The Types of Bait
There are several types of bait, and each type is most effective for certain species of fish.
After you’ve unlocked fishing, the very first thing you’ll want to do is unlock all the types of bait. You can unlock the bait types by catching 9 Medakas.
Bait is purchased from the fisherman Nantuck, whom you can find on the northeast coast just outside of Mondstadt.
Here’s a quick summary of all the types of bait and the fish they work best on:
Bait | Fish |
Fruit Paste Bait | Medaka, Aizen Medaka, Crystalfish, Dawncatcher, Glaze Medaka, Sweet-Flower Medaka |
Redrot Bait | Akai Maou, Betta, Lunged Stickleback, Snowstrider, Venomspine Fish |
False Worm Bait | Abiding Angelfish, Brown Shirakodai, Purple Shirakodai, Raimei Angelfish, Tea-Colored Shirakodai, Moonfin |
Fake Fly Bait | Golden Koi, Rusty Koi, Pufferfish, Bitter Pufferfish |
Glowgrass Bait (no longer obtainable; special Lunar Realm event item) | All fish, Moonfin |
Unlocking All The Fishing Rods
There are five different types of fishing rods in Genshin Impact. Each type is tied to a specific region in the game. Use the rod associated with the region you’re fishing in to increase your odds of catching fish there.
Most rods can be purchased at each region’s Fishing Association except for the Wilderness Rod and the Moonstringer.
The Wilderness Rod is immediately added to your inventory after completing the Exploding Population quest that unlocks fishing in Genshin Impact. It does not increase your odds of catching fish.
The Moonstringer was only obtainable by participating in the Lunar Realm event, which ended on September 20. This is the only rod that provides the fishing bonus effect regardless of region.
Here’s the full list of all the rods, the region each is associated with, and what you have to exchange to get them:
Rod | How To Get It | Associated Region | Cost |
Wilderness Rod | Complete Exploding Population Quest (Mondstadt) | Mondstadt | Granted automatically after completing the Exploding Population quest |

What Is The Best Technique for Catching Fish?
The first thing you should do when approaching a Fishing Point is identify the types of fish available there and equip the appropriate bait. Once you’ve got your gear ready, it’s time to start casting! Actually getting a bite isn’t as simple as throwing your hook at the nearest fish, though.
First, never cast your hook directly onto the fish you want to catch. This will alarm the fish and cause it to swim away from your hook. The best technique is to cast your hook close enough to attract the fish’s attention without startling it. You’ll get the best results if you land the hook within the fish’s line of sight.
This is the best place to cast your hook. Notice that the indicator is ahead of the Pufferfish and directly within its line of sight.
