2018 seemed to be the year of the battle royale with new releases such as Totally Accurate Battlegrounds, Realm Royale and Ring of Elysium and games like PUBG and Fortnite still reigning supreme on Twitch.
While the genre appears to be keeping most of its traction going into the new year a study just released by GitHyp revealed that Ring of Elysium alone saw an increase in its player base among battle royale games on Steam. While heavy hitters such as Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds saw a 68% decline in its player base according to the study, Tencent’s Ring of Elysium managed a 20% increase in its player base.
Having launched in September, Ring of Elysium aimed to shake things up in the battle royale scene by having players contend with a dynamic weather system which includes avalanches and the risk of hypothermia (and as of the latest map an active volcano) as well as one another. Tencent also threw extreme sports into the mix by offering snowboarding, hang gliding and BMX bikes as forms of transportation available to players to getting around the map.
You can find out more about Ring of Elysium on the official site, or by heading to the game’s Steam page here.
