The Global Game Jam is on this weekend! After watching the keynote by veteran game designer Chris Avellone (Black Isle Studios, Obsidian), jammers will find out the secret theme of Global Game Jam 2020 and commence the design process, from brainstorming to creation, which will end 48 hours from each location’s respective start time on February 2nd. This year six new countries have joined the GGJ family, Burkina Faso, Zimbabwe, Cyprus, Sudan, Benin and Mauritius with currently over 30,000 jammers registered in 938 jam sites across 119 countries.
“We’re honored to have Chris Avellone joining us as Global Game Jam’s keynote for 2020,” said Kate Edwards, Executive Director of Global Game Jam. “This is our 12th Global Game Jam, and we are excited to usher in the new decade with creativity and teamwork with a bigger group in more countries than ever before.”
This year will kick off with videos from the keynote speaker, Chris Avellone, as well as jamming mental health advice and tips from the charity Take This, all before the secret theme is revealed. The Global Game Jam is a yearly event that unifies professional, student and hobbyist game designers in an international unified effort to create game experiences based around a central theme, which changes every year.
The Global Game Jam is also a charity and is holding a fundraiser to meet their goals to continue work on Global Game Jam and Global Game Jam NEXT. For more information and to contribute visit: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/global-game-jam-fundraiser
The Global Game Jam (GGJ) is the world’s largest game jam that provides a common theme where amateur, professional and hobbyist game creators can join in, creating video games in physical locations around the world. It brings together creative minds to share experiences and express thoughts, ideas and sentiments through the medium of video games. The weekend stirs an international, creative buzz in the industry, exploring the process of game development in every aspect, including programming, iterative design, narrative exploration and artistic expression. Condensed into a 48-hour development cycle, the GGJ encourages people of all backgrounds to participate and contribute to the spread of game development and creativity in an open, non-competitive atmosphere.
