NACON and Spiders have released a brand-new video offering a deeper look into the creative process behind the narrative RPG GreedFall The Dying World. This latest showcase focuses on the design of Yecht Fradí, the fictional language spoken by the natives of Teer Fradee.
The video features an interview with Antoine Henry, linguist and co-creator of Yecht Fradí, who breaks down how the language was developed and why it plays such an important role in the sequel. GreedFall The Dying World is currently available in Early Access on Steam, with a full release planned for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S in 2026.
GreedFall The Dying World | The Origins of Yecht Fradí
Building a Language for Teer Fradee
Yecht Fradí is the native language of the island of Teer Fradee and was created by Antoine Henry alongside Jehanne Rousseau, Creative Director of Spiders and co-founder of the studio. While the initial concept explored using a real ancient language, the team ultimately chose to design a fictional dialect inspired by Proto-Celtic and its descendants, including Old Irish, Old Welsh, Old Breton, and Gaulish.
This approach allowed the developers to fully express the culture, identity, and beliefs of Teer Fradee’s inhabitants, while still grounding the language in recognisable historical influences.
A Bigger Role Than Ever Before
Although Yecht Fradí appeared in the original GreedFall, it takes on a much more central role in GreedFall The Dying World. This time, players step into the role of a native of Teer Fradee, making linguistic authenticity vital to player immersion.
Designing a believable and functional language was essential, not only for world-building but also to support dialogue, storytelling, and voice performances throughout the game.
Language Rooted in Nature
According to Antoine Henry, the language reflects the deep connection the natives of Teer Fradee have with nature:
“The inhabitants of Teer Fradee live in harmony with nature, which is very evident in their culture. This is also reflected in their language, particularly in their idiomatic expressions and interjections.”
Examples include the greeting “Beurd tír to mad”, meaning “May the Earth bear you well,” and the exclamation “Nod fradí!”, loosely translated as “Holy sap!”. Henry also explained that close collaboration with voice actors was key, ensuring the phonetics and rhythm of Yecht Fradí felt natural during performance.
A Dark Journey Before the Original Game
GreedFall The Dying World is set three years before the events of the first game. Players are cast as a native of Teer Fradee, forcibly taken from their island to the continent of Gacane, homeland of the renaigsa, or “foreigners” in Yecht Fradí.
In a land torn apart by war, political intrigue, and the devastating Malichor plague, players must fight to regain their freedom and shape their own destiny. Whether through diplomacy, deception, or combat, your choices will influence the fate of both the continent and your homeland.
