I love a good strategy game, I’ve had to uninstall Civ and Command and Conquer too many times to count to stop be from pulling accidental all nighters whilst leading a war, with games like Mount and Blade having to be hidden behind chairs when assignments are due to make sure I don’t try and forget about it whilst raging a war against the whole land. So when I pick up a game that has simple strategy I usually scoff at it, something that is far too easy. However if you give me a story or concept that feels brand new? Well this is thankfully what we have here wrapped up in a pseudo strategy game.
Has been Hero’s has a concept that honestly drew me in from the start, no hulking hero’s or special little upstarts, a story about Hero’s past the prime of their life and still fighting? Sign me up this is actually a interesting idea for once, but with that being said just having a good idea does not automatically make a good game, so does it manage to do this? Well it does and it doesn’t at the same time.
Like we said this is a story that focuses on Hero’s that are past their prime, an idea I love. You start off as a rouge who isn’t a hero, instead is someone trying desperately to be a hero, out in search of any heros she can find. She comes across our Has been Hero’s who need to visit the king and our story moves on from there. I can’t stress this enough it feels so good sometimes to play a game with a unique story and whilst there are the tropes of fantasy here overall it is a very unique story.
Gameplay wise the game is very simple, you have rows where each Hero can attack in, and each Hero has their own ability or skill set, meaning some can knock back shields, or deal more damage to certain enemies. The highest amount of strategy available to this game is swapping these lanes mid fight to put your Hero in front of an enemy that they have an advantage over.
If the enemy gets to you? Its pretty much game over, but 9/10 times you can get the kill relatively easy because overall this isn’t actually a very difficult game to work with. However you know what is? The god damn tutorial, I don’t know why but I struggled so much to understand what was going on in some of the tutorial levels that I struggled to complete them in a few attempts, I have no idea why but I found these tutorials so frustrating, and the fact that if you get hit once the fight restarts? Why what’s the point of that, seriously please fix that because it is a massive frustration to me. Honestly this is a game I would more expect to see being released on the IPad or Android than a full PC release, however sometimes it is nice to have a game that is more simple strategy than fully in-depth, though if you are like me and love a good strategy game you will be disappointed with what is available here.
Graphically the game has a very strange art style, it feels like they went for a hand drawn style, but didn’t have the time to do it? I am not sure, it feels very much like one of those flash games you see sometimes, but it doesn’t look too bad. Character design is spot on, each of the hero classes having a lot of personality in their design and each of the monsters being very well detailed. I need to stress that this is an art style that is very subjective, but I feel it suits the game well, it’s a very quick game, it has a very clean art style.
Music is nice, sound effects are good and overall it fits the theme that the game is going for, but honestly its pretty average, nothing fantastic but at the same time nothing terrible either, which isn’t the wort thing in the world to be honest.
Overall the game is quite fun, the tutorial is not good, and I struggled to fully understand what it was telling me to do at some point, but once you get a hold of the gameplay it is fun. It is not a deep game, it’s a game you play pretty quickly for short bursts, and honestly I would prefer this on my iPad than on the PC, but it doesn’t change it being a good game overall, 7/10, if you like simple strategy games this is one for you, but I think waiting on a IPad release may be a better idea.
