The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is the best game of all time; new research has revealed.
The study by gaming site im-a-puzzle.com analysed the reviews from critics and users on Metacritic and IGDB for the top 200 games of all time across all releases on different platforms to give an overall average score.
Analysis of the data revealed that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is the highest scoring game of all time, with an average score of 94 out of 100. The game was released in 1998 and received high praise from critics, receiving a 99 score. In the fifth instalment of The Legend of Zelda series, users play as Link and save the world against the evil Ganondorf by solving puzzles, learning songs to play on the ocarina, and travelling through time.
Coming in at second on the list is The Last of Us. The PlayStation 3 exclusive was released in 2013 and received an average rating of 93.67/100 across the three scores. This game is set in a post-apocalyptic US and players control the main character Joel and escort a young girl, Ellie, across the country.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt ranks third on the list, with the game made by Polish developers, CD Projekt RED, earning an overall score of 93.11, just behind The Last of Us. In the third and final game of The Witcher series, users play as the witcher Geralt of Rivia and search The Continent for his lost adopted daughter, Ciri.
Tied for fourth place is Metroid Prime and Portal 2, where both games received an average rating of 92.67 out of 100. Metroid Prime is a first-person shooter where users eliminate enemies and solve puzzles with a Power Beam and Gravity Suit. In Portal 2, the sequel to Portal, players solve puzzles using the famous Handheld Portal Device.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 comes in at sixth on the list. The 2010 release for the Nintendo Wii earned scores of 97 from critics, 91 from users, and 89 on IGDB, equalling an overall score of 92.33. The original Super Mario Galaxy was also released for the Nintendo Wii and is seventh with 92. Both games are action-platformers, including elements that make each level unique, such as gravity and powerups like the Bee Mushroom. The sequel also offers players to use Yoshi to help with levels.
Super Mario Odyssey for the Nintendo Switch is tied for seventh, with the game also having an overall score of 92. The platform game sees players control Mario, and offers Cappy a sentient hat that allows players to control other characters and even objects.
Finishing the top ten is Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn and Perfect Dark, which both earned a rating of 91.67 across the three review scores. Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn is based on Dungeons & Dragons and is set in the most popular story setting, the Forgotten Realms. In Perfect Dark, users play as a secret agent, Joanna Dark, to save a kidnapped scientist and discover more about dataDyne Corporation.
A spokesperson for im-a-puzzle.com commented on the study, saying: “Popularity of gaming has proliferated in the past few decades, and great games have helped to propel this growth. The data shows that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is the best game of all time, earning high praise from both critics and users. It is interesting to see that a game from 1998 is still regarded as the best, but more recent games such as The Last of Us and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt have come close to taking the throne.”
