Bungie is throwing open the doors ahead of launch with the Marathon Server Slam, giving players a limited-time chance to jump into Marathon before its full release on March 5.
The Server Slam runs from February 26 at 10 a.m. PT through March 2 at 10 a.m. PT and will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. Even better, you won’t need PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass to take part.
This preview event is also included as part of Xbox Free Play Days and Steam Next Fest, making it one of the most accessible large-scale multiplayer tests we’ve seen in a long time.
What Is the Marathon Server Slam?
The Server Slam acts as a large-scale public test and gameplay introduction to Marathon’s extraction-based formula. Players step into the role of a bio-cybernetic Runner and scavenge the lost colony of Tau Ceti IV while fighting for survival.
During the event, players will get access to a curated slice of the experience, including:
- A limited selection of maps
- Select Runner shells
- A focused set of contracts
This isn’t the full launch build. Bungie has confirmed that additional maps, factions, contracts, gear, and more will roll out at launch and throughout Season 1. The Server Slam is designed to stress-test servers while giving players a meaningful hands-on preview.
No Subscription Required
One of the biggest wins here is accessibility. The Marathon Server Slam does not require:
- PlayStation Plus
- Xbox Game Pass
That means if you own a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, or have access to Steam, you can jump straight in without paying for an online subscription.
For players on the fence about picking up Marathon at launch, this is the perfect opportunity to test performance, gameplay feel, and the overall extraction loop before committing.
Earn Rewards for Launch
Getting involved during the Server Slam isn’t just about early access. Bungie is offering rewards that carry over into the full game at launch.
Players who participate in or even watch the Server Slam can unlock:
- Tiered gear packages
- Cosmetic Twitch Drops
- Additional launch bonuses
If you’re planning to grind from day one on March 5, these bonuses could give you a solid head start when the full experience goes live.
Marathon Collection [001] Merch Drops February 26
For fans looking to take their hype beyond the digital battlefield, Bungie is also launching the Marathon Collection [001] on the Bungie Store at 10 a.m. PT on February 26.
The first drop includes:
- Marathon Collection [001] Logo Hat

These items go live at the exact moment the Server Slam begins, so expect stock to move quickly. Players can also still pre-order Marathon via the Marathon Collector’s Edition through the Bungie Store.
