B. Dave Walters, creator (Dungeons & Dragons: A Darkened Wish), actor (Salvage Marines), and tabletop RPG livestreamer (Victor Temple on Geek & Sundryβs Vampire the Masquerade: LA by Night) has launched a documentary project about race relations in America that seeks to help everyone find ways to improve communication about these problems and work towards collaborative solutions. Dear America, From a Black GuyΒ is Waltersβ new documentary that focuses on finding ways to respectfully and productively discuss the issues of inequality and racism β something that he feels isnβt happening as frequently as it should.
βYelling at each other isn’t working. Ignoring each other isn’t working,βΒ said Walters. βI am creating this documentary to try and bridge the growing gap in our country so that we can remember how to talk to each other with respect. Because if we don’t, the Ship of State is going to sink with ALL of us trapped onboard.β
The core goal of Dear America, From a Black GuyΒ is to explain three things:
- How systemic racism and inequality have built the world we live in, and how to see it for what it is in all its guises
- Why βgood peopleβ do racist things: Why your aunt feels the need to keep posting βAll Lives Matter,β or why your racist uncle hasnβt missed church in 20 years but condones keeping kids in cages at the southern border, and more importantly, how something called βmoral framingβ can help you reach these types of βmorally lostβ people.
- The need to actually listen to each other with respect β how to engage with people you disagree with to try and find some sort of common ground. Without a clear, calm, and respectful way to communicate, people may hear whatβs being said, but wonβt truly be listening.
