The Sole Supplier reveals that demand for the new Nike PG5 PlayStation 5 Colorway release has spiked by an incredible 8,900%, for context the PlayStation 5 saw a 307.89% increase in demand pre-release.
The PlayStation sneakers are a collaboration between Nike and Sony for NBA and Los Angeles Clippers star Paul George inspired by the PlayStation 5. The PlayStation 5 is one of the most difficult consoles to get hold of right now, despite almost 8 million units being sold since launching in November 2020. If the availability of the upcoming PlayStation 5 sneakers is anything like that of the console they’re based on, expect the shoes to be hard to find once they’re released, with a very high resale value.
Following on from previous Paul George PlayStation collabs, the tongues of the shoe feature the PG and PlayStation logos on them while the colors of the shoe are heavily inspired by the industrial design of the PS5 with references on the sock liner and outsoles.
The sneaker also features the iconic PlayStation shapes along each shoe in the same pattern as on the DualSense wireless controller. Being a basketball shoe the PG5 has been designed with performance in mind, more specifically to create a lighter shoe by removing the strap from the PG4 and a lot of the rubber from the outsole and midsole.
PlayStation sneakers reach $100 MILLION resale value, will the new release see the same?
The PlayStation 5 itself is reaching upwards of £800/$1000 on resale sites such as StockX which suggests that any PS5 related products could see the same attention.
Looking at other PlayStation-related sneakers give us an idea as to how much the value of the new PG 5 sneakers could increase upon release. Nike and Sony have worked together on iconic shoes like the “PlayStation” Air Force 1 Low from 2006, which now goes for as much as $60,000 on the resale market, as well as other pairs for Paul George including a Nike PG with a PlayStation 4 DualShock controller theme and another designed after the original PlayStation.
We also recently saw the PlayStation x Travis Scott x Nike Dunk Low released as a promotional sneaker around the PlayStation 5 release, only five were raffled off to lucky fans in the U.S. causing resale prices to reach insane levels, such as $100 million for a size US12 on StockX (April 2021).
The PG 5 PlayStation 5 colorway drops in select regions starting on May 14, 2021. For more information on the release keep an eye out on The Sole Supplier.
