KOEI TECMO Europe and developer Team NINJA have officially unleashed Nioh 3, inviting aspiring shoguns to step through the gates of hell and conquer the Crucible in their latest dark samurai action RPG. The game is now available worldwide on PlayStation 5 and Windows PC via Steam, with a new launch trailer released to showcase the brutal challenges that await.
Nioh 3 Launch Trailer
A Battle for the Shogunate
In Nioh 3, players assume the role of Tokugawa Takechiyo, a young warrior destined to become the next shogun during Japan’s prosperous Edo period. However, peace is short-lived. In the shadows, Takechiyo’s younger brother, Tokugawa Kunimatsu, is consumed by jealousy. Empowered by a sinister force, Kunimatsu raises an army of yokai, bringing the era of peace to a violent end and plunging Japan into chaos.
Guided by the mysterious Guardian Spirit Kusanagi, Takechiyo transcends time itself, travelling across eras in a desperate effort to reclaim Japan from the forces of hell and fulfil his destiny as shogun.
The Largest and Most Ambitious Nioh Yet
The scope of Nioh 3 is the largest in the series to date. Players will explore multiple historical eras and regions, including Edo Castle, the Totomi region during the Warring States period, Kyoto in the Heian era, and — for the first time in franchise history — the Bakumatsu period.
Each era is presented as a vast open field, offering freedom to explore beautifully crafted environments that reflect the tone and mythology of each time period. It’s a clear evolution for the series, blending Nioh’s signature intensity with a broader sense of scale.
Two Combat Styles, One Relentless Battlefield
Combat in Nioh 3 revolves around two distinct styles that players can switch between instantly during battle: Samurai and Ninja.
Samurai Style delivers the grounded, weighty combat Nioh fans expect, while introducing the new Arts Proficiency system to enhance Martial Arts abilities. A new Deflect mechanic allows players to block enemy attacks at the last possible moment, opening up counterattack opportunities against even the deadliest foes.
Ninja Style, on the other hand, focuses on speed and agility. Players can perform rapid dodges, aerial attacks, and strike from a distance using a variety of Ninjutsu techniques. New abilities such as Mist, which leaves an afterimage to distract enemies, and Evade, designed for precision dodging, allow skilled players to outmanoeuvre opponents and deliver devastating attacks from behind.
Free Demo Available with Carry-Over Rewards
Before diving into the full game, players can sharpen their skills in a free demo available on both PS5 and PC. The demo supports solo play and online multiplayer for up to three players, allowing fans to create a custom character and experience the turbulent Warring States period.
The demo also includes a challenging boss fight against Jakotsu-baba, with save data carrying over to the full game. Players who complete the demo by 15th February 2026 will receive the in-game bonus item Twin-Snake Helmet in the full release.
Please note that cross-play is not supported, and PlayStation 5 users in Germany will require a PlayStation Plus subscription to access the demo.
Editions and Early Purchase Bonuses
Nioh 3 is available in multiple editions. The Standard Edition includes the base game, while the Digital Deluxe Edition adds exclusive in-game items and a Season Pass featuring two future DLC expansions.
Collectors can also pick up a SteelBook Launch Edition, featuring a premium metal case. All versions include an early purchase bonus for a limited time, redeemable via the PlayStation Store and Steam. The Hellfrost Armor set can be claimed until 20th February 2026, alongside bonus armour inspired by protagonists from previous Nioh titles.
Nioh Meets History
To mark the launch, Nioh 3 and the wider franchise are featured in the Samurai exhibition at the British Museum, now open to the public. It’s a fitting celebration of the series’ deep roots in Japanese history and mythology.
