It was a case of what could have been in today’s Virtual Spanish Grand Prix for Alex after a costly two-stop strategy saw him finish just shy of the podium after starting fifth on the grid. His teammate and Man City football star Sergio Aguero impressed on his debut after crossing the line in fourteenth position having started the race in seventeenth.
Alex made a good getaway as the lights went out to jump to second place in the opening corners but a one-stop strategy proved the better option as he found out later in the race. Meanwhile PUMA football athlete Sergio Aguero had a faultless debut with very few mistakes over the 33-lap race to come home in a highly respectable P14 on his first visit to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
Commenting after the race, Alex said:
“Tonight wasn’t our night, but I still had a lot of fun and congratulations to George on the win. I was happy with my lap in qualifying but I went a tiny bit wide and the time was deleted for track limits. In the race, our pace was really strong but we were unlucky with the strategy and we just missed out on the podium. It wasn’t to be but the fastest lap award is something I guess! It was fun racing with Sergio tonight and he showed he’s really fast. You can see with all the top athletes that they want to be the best they can be and they put so much effort in, so well done to him as he did a really good job and I hope he enjoyed it.”
Sergio added,
“I really wanted to improve on my position today and challenge at the front of the pack, but the race was very tough. Congratulations to George Russell on a great victory. I enjoyed today’s race and the whole experience has been amazing, I would love to come back and do it again. Thank you to F1, PUMA, Aston Martin Red Bull Racing, my teammate Alex Albon and my coach Nestor Garcia for all their help this week.”
