New Twitter research has revealed that cosy game enthusiasts consider Stardew Valley to be the best of the bunch, as it provides the most relaxing gameplay.
The analysis, pulled together by bonusetu, looked at all tweets mentioning the most popular cosy games – including Animal Crossing, Disney Dreamlight Valley, and The Sims – alongside common complaints and in-game features, to identify global players’ favourites.
Of all titles analysed, the RPG game Stardew Valley was revealed to provide the most relaxing gaming experience, as it encountered the fewest disruptive issues – according to players.
When compared to other popular cosy games, the title saw the fewest online complaints around gameplay issues like crashes or freezing, lags, glitches, bots, bugs, hacks and cheaters – awarding it the title of the least-problematic title to play.
The game also received the most praise around its in-game features, which include the NPCs, the quests, the progression, customisation options, and ungradable skills.
Stardew Valley sees players inherit an old farm plot, which they must customise, tend to and populate with crops and animals – all whilst uncovering valuable treasures, befriending over 30 residents, and building relationships with 12 special townsfolk.
Of the in-game features, the Twitter data reveals players are the biggest fans of the farm layout options – with seven versions available to choose from, followed by the variety of crops, which can be used for profit, food or gifts.
Players were also particularly fond of the Stardew Valley ‘villagers’ – characters that live in and around Pelican Town, executing daily routines and providing players with quests.
Behind Stardew Valley, the second-most popular cosy game is Disney Dreamlight Valley – which, despite being in early access, hasn’t received as many complaints around glitches, crashes or similar bugs as some of other popular cosy games.
Of the few issues players have been reporting on recently, the most-disruptive came out as the game screen often freezing, and some lagging between cutscenes.
Players also expressed their excitement around the upcoming Festival of Friendship update, which hints at a new character coming to the valley, along with more quests.
Rounding out the top three most popular cosy games is The Sims – which, although players on Twitter frequently complain about bots and cheaters – was still a favourite amongst fans.
Top 5 most popular cosy games, according to Twitter
Rank | Game | Top Complaint | Favourite Feature |
1 | Stardew Valley | Crashing | Farm layouts |
2 | Disney Dreamlight Valley | Bots | Characters |
3 | The Sims | Bots | Interior decor |
4 | Animal Crossing | Crashing | Characters |
5 | Cosy Grove | Crashing | Art style |
*complaint ratio refers to the volume of gameplay complaints scaled against all game-related tweets
On the other end of the scale, the cosy game that has received the highest reported number of gameplay issues on Twitter was revealed to be Hogwarts Legacy, with 76% of complaints relating to bots, and a further 15% relating to the game crashing or freezing.
Other games that appeared in the analysis but that didn’t make the top five favourites included Dorfromantik, Bear and Breakfast, and Coffee Talk.
When it comes to which gameplay disruptions are the most prevalent across all cosy games, the data reveals players are the most irritated by spam bots – with Sims the most-affected – followed by crashing and game freezes.
Speaking on the findings, a bonusetu spokesperson said: “People often turn to cosy games at times of stress, as they provide a safe and wholesome in-game environment whereby players can consistently complete small quests for instant validation and praise.
“It’s a shame then that some players have their experience disrupted by common in-game complaints like crashing, lagging and bots – although Twitter provides some good insight into which titles are the least-affected, and therefore the most relaxing or ‘best’ cosy game.
“Stardew Valley has long been one of the most popular titles, and for good reason. It’ll also be interesting to see whether Disney Dreamlight Valley’s upcoming update will affect its position in the ranking.”
