With the release of Skyrim’s new downloadable content Dragonborn, be ready to spend several more hours back in the land of Skyrim! This DLC pack takes you back to Solstheim an island in Morrowind where most of the quests will take place. So is this latest edition to Skyrim worth the cost?
Dragonborn‘s story, as mentioned earlier, is set on the island of Solstheim and focuses on the return of Miraak – a Dragonborn. It’s up to you to recover Blackbooks in order to gain new powers and to defeat Miraak. This expansion pack is the third to be released for Skyrim and has a much more engaging story with a load more features than previous add-ons have been able to offer. The story took me around 8 to 9 hours to complete which is a great length for a downloadable content pack, bear in mind this is without me going anywhere near any of the side quests etc.
Let’s start off with the new area which, in one world, is nostalgic. If you have played Morrowind (several years back) Solstheim will be a nostalgia trip for you, though if you never picked up Morrowind you still have a lot in store for you with a great new landscape and surprisingly still keeping that Skyrim feel to it.
The biggest feature which I had been looking forward to throughout the whole expansion pack was the ability to ride Dragons, after all Skyrim was all about dragons! This sadly let me down slightly due to the fact that you learnt the three words (to cast the shout) throughout the main quest, leaving the ability to the end of the game. Don’t get your hopes up though the dragon flying ability is nowhere near as good as expected, even if it was enjoyable the first time I used it. You are able to land your dragon and hop off to fight though other than that there isn’t much else to do with dragon flight – don’t get me wrong though, this isn’t like taxi travelling Grand Theft Auto IV, in fact it’s slightly more enjoyable!
With all the new content which Dragonborn has to offer and the amount of hours which it adds to the gameplay I can safely say this is one of the best expansion packs which has been added to Skyrim to date. The story was enjoyable, though it felt like it could have benefited from a bit more complexity and been a bit less rushed. However despite these flaws pointed out Dragonborn is truly the DLC pack we’ve all been waiting for and doesn’t feel as small as the DLC packs which have preceded it.
Overall Dragonborn deserves 4/5, definitely go check this package out if you are a Skyrim fan… though be warned you are going to lose yourself in the immersive world of Skyrim all over again.
Pros:
- > Back to Morrowind
- > Solstheim is a great new place to explore
- > Good length of gameplay, takes around 8/9 hours to complete the main quest with the bonus content probably taking up several more
- > Feels like the DLC we’ve been waiting for
Cons:
- > The biggest part of the DLC, riding Dragons, is no-where near as enjoyable as imagined though can be fun the first few times
- > Story isn’t as complex as it could have been
