Song of Nunu A League of Legends Story follows the tale of Nunu and his best pal Willump. For those of you out there who are unfamiliar with League of Legends characters, rest assured that you can dive right into this game without knowing anything about the MOBA game and still have a tonne of fun.
Song of Nunu A League of Legends Story
Players in Song of Nunu A League of Legends Story will take on the role of Nunu, a little boy that lives in the Freljord, a vast frozen wasteland far north in the world of Runeterra. Nunu belongs to the Notai tribe and sadly, his mother Layka has disappeared. Song of Nunu kicks off with Nunu walking through a very heavy snowstorm towards Willump. When you reach Willump though you encounter Lissandra, a snow witch. The game then reverts to the past events from 3 days ago and things get going quite quickly.
Playing as Nunu, players will have to learn how to traverse the environment together with Willump the Yeti. Willump is your best pal and the Song of Nunu A League of Legends Story makes this quite clear to you from the start. Even if you don’t know anything about League of Legends, you will immediately be drawn into this tale thanks to the way Riot Forge and Tequila Works have crafted this story.
Nunu and Willump have to work together to get across the frozen wastelands in search of Nunu’s mother Layka and the Heart of Blue. This involves some fairly basic platforming at first which quickly becomes a lot more complicated. Nunu will be able to sprint, jump and climb. Willump on the other hand does a lot more. This involves some rather ferocious combat with both light and heavy attacks. It feels incredibly satisfying playing as Willump and pulling off flashy combo attacks against enemies.
Platforming in the game involves jumping across rocks, gaps, water and more. Standard fare for any self-respecting platformer game but where Song of Nunu A League of Legends Story excels lies with the fact that it balances your playtime between Nunu and Willump and seamlessly integrates them combining their abilities. For example, Willump can toss Nunu up to higher areas and
Nunu can throw snowballs at explosive objects which will then allow Willump to move elsewhere.
This is done remarkably well throughout the game and it’s an absolute joy seeing the two characters work together to get through some rather tough situations out in the frozen wilds of the Freljord.
Flute Music
Nunu also has access to a flute known as Svellsongur. Using this flute, players will be able to play musical notes that activate rune stones that can move platforms or objects in the game world and allow for some light puzzle solving to take place.
The story of Song of Nunu A League of Legends Story is told via in-game conversations between Nunu and Willlump as well with lore entries that unlock as you discover more of the world. You can also find “Murals” which are hidden away in different areas but you need to look for them because there isn’t any real backtracking allowed in this game. Once you’ve progressed past a section, there’s no going back unless you use a chapter select and reload a previous chapter.
Song of Nunu A League of Legends Story features voice acting that is extremely well done. Nunu’s voice actor did a great job and Willump himself both sounds and looks alive in-game. It’s so incredibly believable and cute that you will be drawn into this tale in no time. It really hooks you and younger gamers will have a blast with this title while their older counterparts will still have a tonne of fun too.
Graphically, Song of Nunu A League of Legends Story looks fantastic with the cartoony aesthetic being gorgeous throughout the game. The game’s world was just so beautiful that there are times where you’ll want to stop and just rotate the camera around to soak up all the detail in the environments and the backgrounds. It is simply breathtaking in its own artistic way.
The soundtrack to Song of Nunu A League of Legends Story is also excellent throughout with the music being incredibly well suited to the title. Nunu’s flute music is also great when solving puzzles and it’s enjoyable when he plays it for Willump around a campfire.
Song of Nunu A League of Legends Story is a very narratively driven linear single-player adventure platformer. Swapping between Willump and Nunu as they progress throughout the game is such a joy because it’s just done so well and the fact that you can even hug Willump makes things even better.
The game also introduces newcomers to the League of Legends franchise to some more characters from its world and fans of the franchise will love the references to the overarching lore of the world. While I am by no means a League of Legends lore expert, it was great seeing some prominent characters make an appearance in this title. Learning and seeing more of the Freljord itself was captivating.
Song of Nunu A League of Legends Story ran perfectly fine on PC. The game is playable with either mouse and keyboard or with a controller. However, playing with a controller is definitely the better option here because of the platforming gameplay. I didn’t encounter any bugs while playing but I have seen a few Steam reports stating that there’s stuttering issues and some game-breaking problems in the late game. Hopefully these are addressed with patches.
Final Verdict
Overall Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story is an excellent single player game. It’s over in around 8 hours or slightly more depending on your playstyle and speed. There is a tad bit extra longevity for completionists who will have to reload specific chapters to get all the collectible murals and lore entries. This is a game that I can highly recommend. Riot Forge and Tequila Works have created an instant classic and a worthy addition to the League of Legends franchise series of games.
