Sonic Racing CrossWorlds is out next week, and we got the chance to try out the free-to-play Demo that’s currently available. I’ve always been quite a fan of the Sonic racing video games, so being able to dive into a new one after so many years has been great! Is the demo worth checking out, and should you consider picking up the final release build? Let’s start our engines and find out, shall we!
In the Sonic Racing CrossWorlds – Demo, you can try out 4 characters, 8 courses (3 main courses + 5 CrossWorlds), 12 different Machines, and customise your playstyle with 20 Gadgets. You can also test out Grand Prix and Time Trial modes, and explore the Garage to personalise your vehicle.

Fairly straightforward stuff for any self-respecting racing game. Where things differ in Sonic Racing CrossWorlds lies with the fact that each racetrack features a “Cross World” section. Sonic and his pals and rivals will race through a track and can end up in a completely different area because of giant portal rings that appear. This adds a whole new level of complexity to each race since the current race leader will be able to pick which world you cross over into.
On top of this, players will have access to power ups which can be collected throughout the race. These are pretty standard too and can include bombs, mines, boosts, invincibility and more. Strategic use of these items is required should you wish to actually win races against your opponents.
Sonic Racing CrossWorlds is quite fun, with the vehicles handling pretty well on the track. In my time with the demo, the opponents were also quite skilled and weren’t really pushovers on the normal difficulty. It was extremely fun racing against them because of this fact.

The soundtrack of Sonic Racing CrossWorlds seems to be quite enjoyable, with a fun main theme and some good in-game music tracks for each race course. Graphically, since the game uses Unreal Engine 5, it’s extremely pretty with gorgeous-looking environments, tracks and flashy effects. I have no doubt the full game will be filled with even more beautiful locations.
To round off my overview, I also thought it would be good to get some feedback from a younger gamer, so I asked a friend of mine who played Sonic Racing Crossworld’s demo with their kids. They wanted to share their impressions through the eyes of younger players, so I’ve pulled their thoughts together below.
“Playing Sonic Racing Cross Worlds through the eyes of the youngest was pure joy. They couldn’t stop saying “whoosh” every time their car sped off, and it was brilliant to see them connect the game with a story they’d recently been reading, Room on the Broom. That little spark of imagination made racing as Sonic even more magical. The eldest was quick to compare it straight to Mario Kart, calling it “like Mario Kart, but it’s Sonic,” and loved how the powers and abilities gave each race a fun twist.

They did notice that sometimes matches didn’t work as smoothly, and not all players online were kind, but overall, the experience was still a blast, especially getting to play as their favourite blue hero. The youngest summed up their excitement in the simplest, most perfect way: “Sonic go vroom vroom! I press the button and he goes fast! I won the race!” They laughed when they crashed, cheered when they beat their sibling, and in the end decided they liked it even more than Mario Kart—because, in their words, “I like Sonic and friends more.”
So there you have it, folks. Be sure to give Sonic Racing CrossWorlds a try. The demo is free, and it’ll help you make a decision as to whether or not the final game is a good choice for you.
