I have had a couple of gaming headsets, quite a few headsets purely for my i-pod and have a couple of sport headsets lying around. I’ve always preferred them to their smaller ear sized cousins. As my collection grows, I am starting to see not just similarities in the gaming headsets but all three types. Nowadays, for the most part they are all pretty decent. Some have marginally better audio, or a just that little bit more comfortable but on the whole nothing really catches my eye.
However, I are extremely happy to say that my latest set, the SteelSeries Siberia V2 USB, stands out very strong from the crowd. The Frost Blue Illuminated Special Edition is a variety of the standard Siberia V2, which so many PC games continue to use, though the changes are most notable in the visual department. The set glows with a soft cool blue light from the ear cups, so it stands out visually, but what I am really loving is the sound quality, as they truly sound fantastic.
Straight out of the box you will get obviously the headset, a manual, small SteelSeries sticker and also a USB cable so that you can extend the wiring by a hefty 3 meters! This really helps if you just want to sit back and listen to some music whilst not being at your desk or if you have an extravagant PC setup, which means the USB’s, are far from your desk.
First of all, like its predecessor this products main strength are in comfort and sound, and now also style. When I say it’s comfortable, I mean it’s extremely comfortable, to the point where I never want to take it off. Instead of their just being a regular headband, the Siberia V2 has a padded band, which has four elastic cables extending out to automatically adjust to the head size of the user. This provides one of the most comfortable and lightweight experiences that can come from wearing a headset. It’s literally so lightweight you cannot even feel the top section, only the ear cups. I have worn these for about three hours and if you are the type of person that wears headsets for music of gaming for long periods of time, and then you really should check these out.
Siberia V2’s sound is amazing. Its large, wide and much closer to an audiophile sound than you would typically find in other gaming headsets. The stereo sound from the Siberia V2 puts forward a low end, which is not too bass heavy and at the top end it’s clearly defined without being to hard on the ear. I found that there’s not really much point in changing the settings in the settings because it comes out sounding amazing straight out of the box. The 50mm audio drivers and sound card (built into the USB) pack a punch to your ears, giving you good bass response and explosions and gunfire/magic in games couples with good clear vocal audio and treble.
The microphone is lovely and doesn’t stick out at all. In fact it’s well hidden and can be pulled out from the bottom of the left ear cup easily. I really liked the fact that the wire is bendable and retractable, letting you love the microphone into a position that suits you. If you don’t want to use it anymore, push it back into the ear cup, very slick. The noise cancellation on some headsets isn’t too pretty but on the Siberia V2’s it works like a treat. It really makes a huge difference to the person listening to you. The only point of criticism would be that I dislike the microphone mute switch as its on a slider mechanism which I don’t think works too well. Instead maybe a push down button so you know when it’s muted.
The big selling point – other that it’s superior sound and comfort – for the Siberia V2 is that they glow a distinctively cold blue. On a headset, that’s cool. It makes you stand out from friends and fellow gamers. The lights are built into the outside of the ear cups and light up when first plugged in. You can change the intensity from high to low and also have the lights pulsate to the beat of your music of in game soundtrack. It’s not a necessity when coming to gaming headsets, but it really does have the wow factor, especially when in a dark room. All setting can be changed through the SteelSeries Engine software, which lets you do everything from changing the equalizer curves to setting how the lighting performs. The only issue at the moment is that the Engine software is currently only for Windows, with the Mac version coming this winter.
This is my first SteelSeries gaming headset and its good to see that they have really focused on the necessities. Of course apart from the glowing lights, but they look excellent. Apart from the lights there are no crazy extra features. Just excellent sound and comfort. The SteelSeries Siberia V2Frost Blue’s feel good, sound good and look good. Would highly recommend.
