En Masse Entertainment announced the MMORPG back in March 2017 and while that has made my energy spiked to an all-time high, which got replaced by sheer silence as the passing months came in. As it completely got out of my radar, before the end of 2017 the Technical Test finally came in or the so called Closed Beta Test for people that signed up for it. And while I got the email it never went to my attention to check it not until after the signing up has been long done.
Although before we close the 1st quarter of 2018 TERA had finally came into open beta testing to try out its server to the public and despite being a 7 year old game, it felt good enough to play for the weekend despite the crashing and burning that takes place from time to time. But then again, the game itself was massive as I played it a few years back on the PC when it went on with its free-to-play model so it wasn’t surprising that this having issues on an Open Beta Test, after all, that’s what a test is for!
Now I haven’t exactly answered my question, how relevant is it? In seven years is there really a market for this? Or is it just the hype for a new yet older game that’s coming as to why people are getting into it?
With all the brand new games, major titles to boot, it wouldn’t come to me as a surprise if this game gets underwhelmed by all the others that sounds promising to say the least. From The God of War, to titles like Far Cry 5, Red Dead Redemption 2, Spiderman, Ni No Kuni II, Days Gone and even Darksiders III.
Not to mention that Skyforge, a game with the similar model although different in terms of scale ended up being a little too underwhelming for me. But of course it wouldn’t be fair if I don’t mention games that do prosper like Warframe which is being compared quite a lot to Destiny 2 which for some says it’s better to the aforementioned title despite the slow start. It has made some pretty good progress throughout the years and is currently celebrating its 5th year anniversary. So congratulations are in order.
And while it isn’t an MMORPG so to speak, something like Fortnite Battle Royale is going pretty well with an announced mobile version coming out. Something that I really enjoy playing on quick bursts whenever I have the time for it. Correction, I MAKE TIME FOR IT!
PALADINS anyone? The 5 on 5 first person MOBA that had me ever since it came out on consoles has been a huge part of my gaming as well. A game that has been in Open Beta for something that seems like ages and I feel like it’s going to continue even more as new heroes get updated, added and reworked to balance it out as they say when a “nerf” is in order.
Now that I have dragged this long enough, does it really matter? An MMORPG coming to home consoles as massive as TERA is something worth noting about as it might be the start of many. But to be honest, I am really hoping the game to succeed as the game has the ability to be one as long as people gives it a chance. The game is by no means a pay-to-win model for instance. Something that gamers think whenever a game comes out with a free-to-play tagline. The entirety of the game revolves around the grinding and dungeon running with your squad to get ahead of the game. While the devs do require a sort of incentive to even start with the progression towards the console release as to why things like character slots will be limited, and a $15 monthly subscription is necessary.
Without it, there’s pretty much no income coming in aside from cosmetic items that revolves around maid costumes, pirate outfits, tuxedoes to even speedos. Aside from a large variety of mounts, such as birds, lions, panthers, foxes, turtles to name a few. And of course the cute pets that follow you around collecting loot as you go through waves of enemies inside a dungeon or in the overworld. Not to mention the ability to change bust sizes! All of that which I plan to obtain, one way or the other!
Now what do you think? Is it worth your time? Or do you feel it’s not gonna receive the love it deserves? Or rather does it even deserve that love in the first place?
