Tilting Point has acquired the popular terraforming simulator TerraGenesis from Edgeworks Entertainment pushing further into sci-fi themed games, a category it dominates with four of the world’s top sci-fi 10 games published by U.S. companies. Starting today, Tilting Point will take over the game’s mobile and PC development with creative direction and counsel from Edgeworks, which will remain a brand licensor for the title. The TerraGenesis deal follows Tilting Point’s recent string of acquisitions in 2020 – FTX Studios’ portfolio of games and its internal Plamee Studio in July and Star Trek Timelines and the internal team behind it in March.
“TerraGenesis is a fantastic case study that not only showcases the value and success of collaboration, but also the impact of thinking outside the box when creating a completely niche and unique title,” said Samir Agili, president, Tilting Point. “This acquisition is an organic next step in our progressive publishing relationship with Edgeworks. With TerraGenesis, our goal is to build on what already makes the game a hit within its community, all while growing its revenue and fan base using our proprietary tools and expert teams.”
TerraGenesis became part of the Tilting Point portfolio with a publishing partnership in November 2017. The company’s involvement in marketing and distributing the title on mobile platforms not only helped Edgeworks grow its staff from one to six employees, but it also increased TerraGenesis’ average gross revenue from $20,000 per month to $350,000 per month ($14 million to date). Under Tilting Point’s guidance, TerraGenesis has surpassed 21 million downloads, and earned Edgeworks a Mobile Game Awards nomination for Best Indie Developer in 2018. In addition, following immense success on mobile devices, the game launched on PC platforms earlier this year.
“Tilting Point has been a great partner to us over the past three years, and we are very excited for TerraGenesis’ future with them,” said Edgeworks’ Founder & CEO, Alexander Winn. “What started off as a one-man passion project in my spare time now has a dedicated community made up of millions of players worldwide. We will continue to provide Tilting Point with creative input and direction as licensors, and are very confident in their team’s ability to deliver a polished and exciting experience for our players.”
Rooted in real science and data from NASA, TerraGenesis delivers a deep, near-photorealistic outer-space gameplay experience on mobile and PC platforms. The game lets players create and care for life on their planet while turning it into a thriving paradise. Featuring realistic science and accurate maps with over 45 real-life planets, moons, and even historical versions of Earth to terraform, players are confronted with challenges and opportunities as they transform their world and create a new and unique society on the surface of each and every planet they visit.
Tilting Point helps teams power up their existing games with its live publishing model, in addition to providing top development studios with expert resources, services and operational support. These attributes include a $132 million annual investment user acquisition fund, as well as its proprietary technology and deep bench of talent with extensive free to play experience. Tilting Point has helped developers of over 80 games across the U.S., Europe and Asia scale their great games up to top rankings. Once a game scales, the pathway to bigger projects, such as co-development, is open. Tilting Point is currently scaling 28 games and partnering on 4 co-development projects.
