American Horror Story
Created by Ryan and Murphy and Brad Falchuk, the American Horror Story franchise has now been running to 10 successful and captivating series. Although each has been self-contained, covering various topics, some members of the ensemble cast continuously make guest appearances. Amongst these stellar performers are Jessica Lange, who has won multiple awards for her roles, Lady Gaga, and Kathy Bates. Other actors worth mentioning are Evan Peters, Lily Rabe, and Emma Roberts. As well as paranormal activity and murderous cults, the show is strong on LGBTQ topics. One series, entitled ‘Cult,’ dealt with the aftermath of Trump’s victory in the 22nd US presidential election, known for its whipping up of populist distrust towards the LGBT community.
Sex Education
This comedy-drama from the UK has now run to three seasons and features many notable actors, including Gillian Anderson and Asa Butterfield. Although the subject matter is often treated flippantly, it carries a potent message. Many of the storylines are particularly focused on the difficulties and traumas faced by LGBT people, especially younger members who are contending with changes in their lives and raging hormones! It has gained widespread critical acclaim as well as a large audience for its bold stand on inclusivity.
Orange Is the New Black
An American comedy-drama set inside a women’s prison, this critically-acclaimed series has been a huge hit since it was first shown on Netflix in 2013. Based on the personal diaries of Piper Kerman, who has experience of a US federal prison, the series has received no fewer than 12 nominations for prime-time Emmy awards. The storylines frequently deal with LGBT issues, and the fact that comedy is often used as the platform to get the message across has widened its appeal considerably.
American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace
Based on the shocking murder of fashion guru Gianni Versace, this series premiered in 2017, featuring a stellar cast including Penelope Cruz, Edgar Ramirez, and Ricky Martin. It has been nominated for various Emmy awards and has placed the terrible events that occurred outside Versace‘s Miami Beach mansion into a powerful context. As well as a straightforward murder investigation, we get a glimpse of the homophobia behind the guilty party’s reasons for gunning down the iconic designer. The fact that the serious crime is presented as human drama makes it all the more palpable for viewers.
Schitt’s Creek
In many ways, the polar opposite to a crime drama, Schitt’s Creek, a hilarious TV sitcom, ran for six seasons from 2015. It tells the story of a wealthy family who lose their fortune and have to relocate to a small town, the titular Schitt’s Creek. Featuring outstanding performances by lead actors Eugene Levy, playing the family head, and his real-life son Dan, playing his pretentious onscreen son David, the series quickly developed a cult following. Dan Levy’s performance as David Rose has been particularly well-received by the LGBTQ community for its shamelessly proud portrayal of gay relationships.
