Computer Disposals collated data on representation of women in video games to reveal the most popular games and genres among female players β and the most recognisable female game characters (based on Google search data).

Results showed that Bayonetta was the most popular female character in the world, whilst Alyx Vance from Half Life was the most popular in the UK.
More findings and stats below:
- France is home to the biggest majority split of female to male games (52:48 ratio)
- Match 3 (puzzle games where the player needs to match tiles to make them disappear) and farming/family simulator games are most popular for female players (69:31 female to male players)
- Candy Crush Saga has 83% female players
- Although just 6% of women plat racing games overall, 40% make up players of Mario Kart games
- Online search popularity for Bayonetta has skyrocketed by +172% following Septemberβs announcement of the seriesβ third instalment
- Two female characters from Mortal Kombat appear in the top 10 ranking – which might seem surprising at first given the wealth of prominent female characters in arguably more iconic fighting franchises such as Street Fighter and Tekken
- With the recent sales successes of Mortal Kombat X (2015) and Mortal Kombat 11 (2019), the series has become the best-selling fighting franchise of all time – solidifying the popularity of its roster.
