What’s your main criteria when looking at second hand cars for sale? Given the current cost of living crisis, we’d suggest a wise move is to put reliability right at the top of your list. The more reliable a car, the less likely it is to generate unexpected expenses.
But how do you know which used cars are reliable? Well, warranty claims are a good marker – the more a car breaks down, the more often a claim will be made against an aftermarket warranty. So, using its own data, Warrantywise has produced a top 10 list of the cars that generate the fewest claims
So if you’re looking for the top 10 most reliable second hand cars, you’ve come to the right place.
Top 10 most reliable used cars
10. Suzuki Alto
This car hasn’t been on sale since 2014 – that it’s still makes this kind of top 10 list is an amazing testament to just how reliable the Suzuki Alto really is. On top of which, if running costs are a big concern, you’ll be please to note it’s also very fuel efficient and cheap to tax. Win win.
9. Ford Ecosport
Interesting. The Ecosport is not a car that you’ll generally find recommended in any other context. It’s a Fiesta-based SUV – which ought to be a good thing – but was originally developed on a tight budget for the Latin American market, so it’s a bit cheap and nasty. Still, the only Ford on this list, which has got to count for something.
8. Lexus CT
The CT was Lexus’s attempt to make a dent in the premium hatchback market, which is typically dominated by German models such as the BMW 1 Series. As such, Lexus thought they had to make it firm riding and sporty – but still lumbered it with an unenthusiastic hybrid engine. Good news is it’s fuel efficient. And you won’t find any BMWs on this list.
7. Nissan Leaf
The first-generation Nissan Leaf proved that mainstream electric cars could be popular. It might look weird, but the technology worked, it wasn’t too expensive and – as its placing here proves – it’s dependable as well. People think electric cars are troublesome in this regard, but actually they have fewer moving parts and less to go wrong.
6. Volkswagen Up
Speaking of what people often think – how many times have you heard that German cars are reliable? Well, the Volkswagen Up is the only car from a German brand in this top 10. Still, if you want a smart, clever, practical city car, the Up’s reliability is just one more reason to consider this little VW.
5. Mazda 2
Mazda is a brand that often gets overlooked but rarely should be. Its cars are always sharply styled and always fun to drive – the MX-5 hasn’t stood the test of time for no reason – and although the Mazda 2 is merely a little supermini, it still has these traits in abundance. It’s a touch cheap-feeling inside, but this high reliability should make up for that.
4. Dacia Sandero
The Dacia Sandero is famously the least expensive new car you can buy in the UK. But cheapness apparently doesn’t equal badly made because it’s also one of the most reliable used cars you can buy in the UK. Probably helps that it’s based on well-proven Renault technology, rather than ultra-modern boundary-pushing stuff.
3. Mitsubishi ASX
You can no longer buy a new Mitsubishi in the UK. But does that mean you shouldn’t buy a used one? Not necessarily, as there is still a full aftersales network in place to support owners – although that’s not to say that getting parts won’t be more difficult in the future. Fortunately, with the ASX SUV being so reliable that shouldn’t be a big issue.
2. Honda Jazz
The only surprising thing about the Honda Jazz coming it at number two on this list of the most reliable motors is that it’s the only Honda in the top 10 – for Honda’s reputation for reliability is genuinely legendary. The Jazz is an amazingly practical small car with clever rear seats and an easy-going driving experience, too.
. Lexus NX
Lexus is the only brand with two cars in this list, and one of them is the most reliable motor of all. So it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the NX must be pretty spectacularly dependable. What’s more, Lexus has an immense supporting reputation for amazing dealer service, while its hybrid tech means low running costs as well. You can’t go wrong here.
