So why am I saying you should buy and own a Nintendo Switch, well I have one, but that’s, not the reason, maybe I want more friends to play with? that’s not it either. Let me tell you why. I am a PC gamer through and through, I own games on the Epic Games Stores, Uplay, Origin, GOG, Steam and a few more applications, I never seen the point in owning a Sony System or an Xbox One, Xbox One even more now since games on that system are also available on PC. Sony, I simply can not stand the controller, but ultimately of hate this console war that a lot of us gamers feel the need to start and keep carrying it on and its made worse thanks to the internet. Now the console war started with SEGA and Nintendo with the NES and Master System, made even worse with the SNES and Megadrive but it was friendly banter between friends, now it is hostile and sometimes disgraceful, it is even fueled by media shoving FPS and Resolutions stats down our throats gloating over which system is better.
Even with all the hostility between systems and gamers, Nintendo Switch gets hurts the most, with hardcore fans on the Xbox, pc and PlayStation always making a remark about how underpowered the system is, when when it comes to FPS, Resolution and graphics. Personally, I do agree on all counts, yes the system is nowhere as powerful as the other consoles and the graphics in the majority of the games are downgraded to run on the system, but this has not stopped me from purchasing any of the games.
If I was to go back to my childhood, I grabbed the systems, well I asked my mom and dad to purchase the systems I really wanted, and that was based on the games, nothing else. I grew up mostly with Mario and Sonic, but I have owned a shed load of systems;
- C16
- C64
- BBC Acorn
- Spectrum
- Atari 2600
- Atari ST
- Commodore Amiga
- NES
- SNES
- Master System
- Mega Drive
- Saturn
- Dreamcast
- Game Cube
- N64
- Wii
- Wii U
- and a bunch of handheld systems.
I started purchasing my own systems with the N64, Dreamcast, Saturn, Gamecube, Wii, Wii U, Switch and PC. Growing up was amazing, and it was all down to my parents, allowing me to play games, learn to build games through coding, and learn to have respect for game developers and most of all patience, and understanding. Games of old took forever to load up, some even took you ages to build as you would input code from a book, and hope you got it all correct, sometimes we would sit there and wait for the tape to finish its loading process, some times it was more than one tape. My main goto source of information was to purchase magazines at that time and read reviews and news articles, pick up the games and read the back of the box, we had no playthroughs or streams, it was solely based on what we thought of the game from pictures and written text.
So what has any of this got to do with buying and owning a Nintendo Switch, well it is about being a gamer, and playing games on any system regardless of its FPS, Resolution or graphics. Purchase the system you want to play the games on. For me, the Nintendo Switch has everything I want, it is portable, dockable so I can play on the big screen, has AAA games and a shed load of quality Indie games along with some not so good indie games. It has games that I grew up with namely the Nintendo Franchise, games like Zelda and Mario and Nintendo are pulling out their wallets and paying for some amazing games to come to the system like Astral Chain.
If you were to purchase a Nintendo Switch now make sure you purchase the correct one that will suit you, mobile-only go for the Nintendo Switch Lite, however, you must understand there are a few things missing, you can never be able to play on a TV, the Joy-cons are attached and can not be removed and some games will not work correctly with the system. Then you have the full version of the Nintendo Switch, with this one make sure you purchase the latest model see picture below, why? well there are a few upgrades, better battery life, the joy-con drift has been fixed, better screen for playing outside and runs cooler underhand.
You might regret getting a Nintendo Switch if you are a fan of OMG that looks amazing, Resolutions, graphics and FPS over gameplay, but If you can move past that let me list a bunch of games that you can play on the Switch, some will be on other systems as well.
- Moonlighter
- Astral Chain
- Zelda
- Super Mario Odyssey
- Dragon Quest Builds 1 and 2
- Super Mario Maker 2
- Mario Kart
- Pokémon
- Dragon Quest XI
- Mario + Rabbids
- Skyrim
- Diablo
- Torchlight
- Octopath Traveller
- Overwatch
- Xenoblade
- Hollow Knight
- Celeste
- Rocket League
- Fire Emblem
- Smash Bros
- Cuphead
- Witcher 3
- Final Fantasy
and that is just some of the amazing franchises on the Nintendo Switch, with hours and hours of gameplay to be had. Nintendo Switch is not about being the best it is about offering a variety, being able to provide a gaming experience regardless of the time and where you are, and this is why I own a Switch. I am able to play whenever I want, even with there is no TV available, I can take the switch to bed when the baby is not sleeping, on the bus to work, in the garden on a sunny day, there is nowhere I can not keep my adventure running.
Have a look at what games are available here https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Games/Upcoming-Games/Upcoming-Games-753286.html you might be surprised, but please do not be put off by the system being less powerful, it more than makes up for it with its games, that is if you like its games, I for one do.
